Watched this twice, straight away. Great video, Very interesting content. I have been intending to deal with that big G/box in the shed. Now I can inspect its O/drive status and possibly see that it does have. The case is an RT*** . Not "O" . This has to be the best news I've had for a Loong time. Then I can sell it .
ОтветитьYeah, I’m gonna need a diagram to understand the power flow in the gearbox, otherwise it’s a whole lot of words that are too hard to string together and follow.
ОтветитьYea this was a fun watch. Always a pleasure to hear an experienced man speak.
ОтветитьI just got my truck licence i tried to learn road ranger but ended up doing synchromesh
ОтветитьHoly Smokes, that's just way to much to NOT know if you're doing swaps and matching of different transmissions! To put all of that back together, just to have sloppiness or grinding or walking out of gear, would be, NOT GOOD, to say the least. Appreciate this video!
ОтветитьThe video gave me some serious flashbacks for my short lived time at a diesel truck shop had to rebuild several 13 speed dump truck transmissions the 9 speeds apparently look similar to the 13 speed just missing the big gear set off the back which is what I worked on the most its been several years ago but I remember having to take that back section off and replacing shims and gaskets can't exactly remember why I was just told to do it I was fresh out of high school trying to see if I wanted to be a mechanic. I did become a mechanic but I did not become a diesel mechanic as it just wasn't for me.
ОтветитьNever knew you could do it at night speed to a 10-speed
ОтветитьDang these guys are knowledgeable!!! But I'm confused as to how you can swap the input gear from a small diameter to a larger diameter and the spacing/engagement to the 2 countershaft gears still be the same
ОтветитьWow, good video, these guys know the tranny!!!
ОтветитьI know nothing about heavy duty clutches, what is the advantage of this three finger clutch disc compared to a full disc like in a car ? This seems like it only have one fifth of the contact area a entire disc would have, i don't get what is the goal of this design ?
ОтветитьI built transmissions for around 15 years. I also used to work for Weller. Paul would visit our branch in Seattle once a year, really nice guy and very knowledgeable.
ОтветитьNo school like old school.
ОтветитьI use a digital degree wheel on the bellhousing and the flywheel housing to get the angle right. Brother it sure makes it easy.
ОтветитьToss a 4 speed brownie in it. You would have serious low-end if you wanted it and double overdrive with your slick 9 speed. I did it with my 73 pete. Factory 5+4 350 cummins. The 5 went out so we stuffed a 13 in it. Ol petie would FLY! It did 35 in reverse before I found my common sense.
ОтветитьThis took me back to 1985 working in a fleet shop working on dump trucks. So cool.
ОтветитьI may not have seen correctly but it looked like as you put the clutch discs on the input shaft you had them splined such that the pucks were not on top of each other. If I understand correctly, the way you should do that is have the pucks as close to in line with each other as possible that way you won't warp the intermediate plate.
ОтветитьSuper cool video, I work mainly on RTLO18918B, 169's, 209's & 229 Transmissions at a reman shop in Alberta building them to spec for our inventory, sometimes the odd parts and labour job comes through the door where its just get r dun don't care how it looks just make it work, but I never get to do anything like this custom gear swapping, this has been a pleasure to watch.
Ответить😎💯👍Custom Built Truck👍💯😎
Ответить“To much talking not enough performance”🫡🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🔥🔥🔥🔥
Ответитьi was just on the phone with an old guy with a differntial shop talking about rear ends for a half hour i just listened and he spoke.
ОтветитьVery cool and informative. But, I could have given you an old RTO-9513 that's sitting on the floor of my shop, and saved a lot of work.
ОтветитьThank you for the video good video. I’ve been working on them for 30 years. I can tell that guy knows what he’s talking about. I left you a comment a few months ago. I could’ve done it for you but that’s OK. I noticed in the video he was telling you to check your flywheel housing run out like I told you in another video but you argued with me and said you did not have to do that. I’m glad he corrected you.
ОтветитьKiller video dude
ОтветитьYou can also get a different top cover for that transmission so you have a standard shift pattern
ОтветитьIt is so a difficult task to sway gears that may have different spline details. You just need donor parts. You can carefully set up a gear and remove the spline on a lathe and machine a detail inside the ring of teeth that has a step in middle of the new bore. Somewhere around middle of the diameter. Then grab your donor spline and rip teeth off and match to details you machined into ring. Press together and tie weld with 312ss wire. Just keep dipping gear in shallow water between welds. Stops teeth softening.
ОтветитьKnowing the right people with the knowledge is the most important part! The world is going to be in a pickle when the guys with all this knowledge pass on & their knowledge becomes lost. The first RR I worked on sliced my knuckle to the bone while I was removing parts out of a 55gal drum we punched a bunch of holes in with a cold chisel. The cosmic acid tank cleaned it up nicely but boy did she burn in that paper cut! Got her cleaned & stitched after my soon to be father inlaw about passed out. He was 6.7 & rarely ever got hurt nor played sports.... Im only 5-11 with boots so I was use to getting stomped on by bulls & kicked by saddle bronks lol😂 love Troy & his dad's view on life! Great guys, hope you stay in touch! Rare people these days!
ОтветитьNo thanks, automatic please for me
ОтветитьFargo is going to be singing nice
ОтветитьWhen you grinded down those bolt heads, all that metal dust flew into the grease of that bearing and now it’s full of crap that will kill its lifespan. Tape that bearing off before you grind 12 bolts 1” from it
ОтветитьKind of is accurate you can make a 9 into a 13 and a 10 into a 15
But not a true 9 into a true 10 speed....still enjoyed the video
I gotta be honest, I tried to pay attention but, that went over my head!! But it’s nice to know people, that know what they are doing!! 10’s better than 9. Excited for to see this truck working!!
ОтветитьHey rich I recommend you add some grease gun hoses to the release shaftgrease points for ease of maintenance in the future
ОтветитьI wish that I had people with that knowledge in my life. I have one person that has some good old school knowledge in my life and I always enjoy spending time with him. He has worked for Ford and Chrysler as a mechanic back in the 70s/early 80s.
ОтветитьNow just put an RTX top cover on it and you will have the H shift pattern
ОтветитьTransmission rebuild by Karl Childers, mmmhmm
ОтветитьA good parts guy for the Win...
ОтветитьGlad to see you joined the team and embraced the baldness. Sucked wearing a hat all the time, didn't it?
ОтветитьMy antique trans is a RTOO-913. If you use a rtX top plate you can switch the shift pattern from a U to the traditional H. The shift towers are also available in different heights. The tallest tower will give the shortest throw shift.
ОтветитьEvery time you resurface the flywheel you need a thicker clutch breake
ОтветитьOnce you u any box it turn overdrive
ОтветитьYou can change the fork cover and get it to change straight instead u-change
ОтветитьAny idea what the final drive gear ratio ends up on the transmission when swapping these gears around? I have a truck that hits 2k rpm at 68 mph unloaded and would like to drop the rpms a bit more.
ОтветитьEngineering by example is pretty much all they do anyways so I trust hands on experience using engineered examples far better
ОтветитьSo classy holding your head and neck in a way it doesn't bang on the hoist.....❤❤❤
ОтветитьGuys that understand and have the know how to build transmission like that are getting few and far between anymore.
ОтветитьLol, got a crazy question, my buddies and I was talking about a project that I'm building, I have 13spd, How could I take the air splitter and make it manual shift,
We figured if it was a valve that was moved by air, why can't we make it mechanical ?
😅😂😂 I eyeballed that! Lol
Ответить@2,48 its still got a Tooff lelf, its still good !
ОтветитьBig thank you to Rex and Troy for putting this together, and to the wizard Charlie at Weller Truck Parts in Indianapolis!
