Hey Zach I found a Optiplex on ebay for 80$ USD. I've never gotten a pc and Im on a tight budget. If I put a gpu in it would it become a good gaming pc?

I did something similar. A i3-4130 desktop with a random 500w psu. Slapped in a gtx970. What could go wrong. EVERYTHING!!! My psu exploded with a pop and I had to replace it. I broke the rules and got a no name psu. I have to use msi afterburner to cap power to 50%. To be fair, the i3-4130 still bottlenecks the whole thing but I hope people can learn from my mistakes. I still daily drive this btw.

There won't ne any fire as these switch mode power supplies have many safety features built into them. As soon as it detects an over current event it will shut down without any damage.

I did something similar with a 3rd gen i5 Optiplex and using a RTX 3060 12GB.
I upgraded the PSU to a 650 watt unit though.

Made for a pretty stable gaming rig for 1080p.

i would just strap on an mx250 and call that a pc

Before 10 years this cpu was handle 980 ti which is top gpu that days.

I have the same model, I stuck a MSI 750 watt PSU, 32gbs of ddr3 ram and a 1080ti in there and it runs surprisingly well

my old computer acually had a 2° gen i5. i used it until the graphic card(that was integrated on the motherboard) stopped working in the end of 2023. i bought a new computer with a ryzen 5 4500 and a gtx 750ti last year wich im using to this very day. luckly i dont play any games that require too much gpu.

Im currently using a 3070 paired with an Intel xeon E3-1240 (yes im planning on upgrading)

I have a optilex and its a pretty good case and it fits like everything and have a good airflow as like 3 fans

I just got an optiplex with an i7 8700k and am planning to put a low profile etc 3060 inside

Guys I will do the same in a Optiplex i7 12 th gen so it new and it has 500 watts psu so I’m good.
