As proclaimed by the US government in the US/China diplomatic establishment, "China is the sole representative of China, including both sides of the Taiwan Straight", I don't see any issue, definitely not the fake surprise demonstrated by the US commander here :). They know they shouldn't be surprised about their own national policy, and if he is surprised, it is his own personal opinion which carries no weight.

Aren’t deterrence and rehearsal two sides of the same coin? If Taiwan knows that a Declaration of Independence will lead to an invasion, let’s hope Taiwan realizes that it isn’t worth it to change the status quo.

China has become strident in its denunciation of Western intervention in its foreign policy. The West played along with its imperialism as its condition of trade, as if we needed them. Big mistake, but one that we have wised up to while there is hopefully still an edge in our favor. Their manufactures may be cheap, but everything else about trade with them is a negative for us. They have been the kiss of death for life in Hong Kong. They assumed they could co opt its prosperity but it has turned in to a dystopian Chinese holiday spot. Some holiday. They would similarly affect Taiwan. But vital strategic interests, not just Western assets, are at stake in Taiwan, and we can't allow China to lay its hands on these and shut us out. And that is to say nothing about the welfare of freedom-loving Taiwanese, who would be bound for Chinese prisons. Even China's elites face such a prospect if they don't make a show of taking copious notes ot their dear leader's every expression, which are about as significant as a stale fart.

In fact, Ccp China is doing like Nazi Germany (or imperial japan), as soon as it thinks it can set foot somewhere it demands that this territory belong to it. These kind of single thought dictatorships only attack the weakest and most fragile. Let's not make the same mistakes as with the nazis before WW2, let's not be cowardly and weak..
