After watching this, it unlocked my memory of Spike Video Games Awards. All the cringe from that award show came back to haunt me.

When i was watching the clip about the Japanese game show, i was like oh this is Takeshi's Castle. then you say it's not just a redub of a Japanese game show... It's Takeshi's Castle, which was an English show... that was just a redub of a 90s Japanese gameshow. It's got redubbed, they couldn't even steal their own gameshow!!

Takeshi's Castle was also a huge deal in Germany. I remember watching it in the early afternoon before the terribly dubbed anime block of Yu-Gi-Oh!, Naruto, early One Piece and Pokemon. I think it was these infamous 4kids dubs transported into german, because it had the weird censoring that would not have been neccessary for german tv.

The best part about Spike tv? Powerblock, a 2 hour, 4 episode set of car/truck modification shows that were holdovers from TNN that aired on Saturday mornings. (Yes, I’m one of the car guys you mentioned).
Powerblock and CSI reruns were basically the only shows I watched regularly on that channel.

Looking at it now its cringey as hell. But when I was a prepubescent boy this kind of programming gave me a lot of validation in a scary time for me. Ironically, it helped me get through my journey into masculinity and helped me understand my morals and that this wasn't what I wanted to be. That journey from being a kid through whats "expected" of you and becoming a person is strange. This trashy ass programming really helped me in my security in my masculinity as well as what I dont want to be. Its strange but it was a good outlet for teenage angst watching Spike.

"Wrestling is just drag for straight people" is the best quote about the sport since "this isn't homo erotic at all". Pro Wrestling is now, and always has been, incredibly "gay". It's so weird now looking at how homophobic and conservative many wrestlers are. Not just the obvious stuff like Goldust, but look at The Undertaker in the 90s. Especially his relationship with his manager, Paul Bearer. They're like a gay couple. There's so many "there's no heterosexual explanation for this" moments. It's so campy and over the top.

I was too poor to have cable, so the only reason I know about this channel is because my grandad recorded Star Wars 3 (prequel) for us and there were some ads he did t skip over that just showed basically naked women and a very weird seductive burger king commercial that always scares me as a kid (it was when the guy was in a human costume instead of just being a human)
