In this devlog: How I used Magic: The Gathering cards to save my indie game...

On this channel, and specifically for the last 2ish years I’ve talked a lot about solo indie game development. I've also made tons of devlogs about big and small indie games I've been working on!

For my indie game Castlemancer, that I’ve been working on for roughly the last year, cards are the main player interaction. Similar to games like Slay the Spire, Hearthstone, or really any other roguelike deckbuilder.

But what separates Castlemancer from the crowd is the actual act of playing a card. In most other games, you move the card from your hand and play it, where the content of the card is what's important. I wanted the cards in Castlemancer to both matter in content and in physicality. So whatever card I play, its effect literally happens on the card in the physical game world.

But I wanted some physical game cards, to see how they felt in the real world. So I went out and bought a pack of Magic: The Gathering cards. I kept these MTG cards on my desk, and from time to time I would fidget with them. I looked at how the information was portrayed, what were the key areas my eyes went to. How they felt in my hand and how I naturally held them etc.

I want it to feel literally like you are dragging a card into a magical world and seeing its effects. Which was ultimately what I was trying to show off in previous devlog as well as this devlog.

Learning game development can be challenging, but also super rewarding. Let me know what you thought of this week's devlog!
