The increase in excise duties on tobacco is a clear sign of economic crisis... The justifications for these increases are just bullshit.
I am Italian, we pay very high excise duties on tobacco and gasoline, but also on electricity and gas .... the "Bel Paese Italy" is in real economic crisis.

I smoke home grown. I carry pipe in my pocket and pot. It has always helped me. My back has been broken three times , L4 removed, both hips shattered, Pelvis split,ankles, wrist ect broken ect. Instead of Oxytocin, pot and Suboxone is a better way. Went to a pain center and they kept me daily going through withdrawals. They wouldn’t give me enough medicine to Make it. I finally had to say no more. They just want money it has nothing to do with the treatment of pain. I witnessed lots of drug addicted Crazies that used white out on someone else MRI ! They got lots of drugs but me honest left to die ! These places should be shut down. If you don’t Trust my regular Doctor to be Honest then he shouldn’t be a Doctor ! This Government has abandoned it sick and needy and they will kill everyone possible ! You know what is happening yet you have your head stuck up your asss and that is sad for the whole World. Nobody can be so STUPID as to believe Biden’s, Obama’s and Soros administration is anything but a arm of the NWO Satanist Nazi Cult Members. Very easy to answer why tobacco is taxed so much (talking here about pipe tobacco and cigars): people who endeavour on the tobacco journey tend to be the ones looking for a certain moral, relaxed life style, appreciation of rafinenment, of crafts, of hand built items - all in all values which are becoming more and more scarce. These people are the free thinkers of our world, contemplating on the existance, on the good and bad aspects of life, etc - meaning they take a step back and think. Now thinking is not something which is needed outside of the workplace and wanted at that, as it is the enemy of consumerism, fast-paced lives, and in general to the shallow way of living which most of the new generation thrieve on nowadays. It is a shame really…lack of morality, focus on non-issues and wasting of resources on policies that have no moral compass…will eventually lead to a world where people who think and have good moral values will be marginalized or maybe indirectly made to “retreat” to places more isolated…in the meantime…enjoy your pipe, tour cigar, keep on appreciating the fine arts and fine craftsmanship…cheers!

As a Canadian pipe smoker, we pay $50 for a bag of a codger blend such as half and half or borkum riff. I personally rely on companies that ship to Canada to get anything at all, $4 for a bag of my everyday smoke (Half and Half) vs something I absolutely cannot afford. I rely solely on the good graces of companies that ship to Canada and I fear that we will soon lose that luxury to bureaucracy as we did here with smokeless tobacco.

As a beginner pipe smoker with so much pipe tobacco out there I think it would be so helpful to have a “must have” list of pipe tobacco that people should own. I know everyone’s taste is different but it would be cool to hear from some more experienced pipe smokers on what their essentials are.

Great points Alan! I work in the utility industry doing customer service. I can tell you firsthand from hearing the voices of my customers, people are having trouble in this economy and I do believe that low morals and high profit margins are to blame for this. we need to find a way to put the power back into the hands of the people and away from privatization of contracts that seem to have a hold on the congress and our high-ranking political parties.

Well no joke the economy has been down lately, we just came through a global pandemic. You also mentioned the post WW2 economic boom of the United States which was inevitable because we were one of the only major economic powerhouses left untouched by war. Also religion and morality, you will often find, have very little to do with each other. Honesty is important, but we also have legally binding contracts so we don’t have to rely on the supposed honesty of people. You will also find that there are just as many so called religious people that are flat out crooks as anyone else. In my experience more so because usually they are using their outward display of religious piety to cover up their real actions and plans. Hell man it’s Shakespearean, look at Richard III

Thanks for video. I am a cheapskate, have more than a pound jarred up and cellared. Few more pound and I would be set for life, current favorite is Match Revelation, need to buy some more. Seeds are cheap, add dirt and labor.
Remember old neighbor back in 1960's, drove a Ford pickup truck, short shifted it. He came from Kentucky, grew his own tobacco cured it in old chicken house, made twists that he would chew or smoke.
Wish I could ask him questions now. He's been gone over 30 years now.

Listening to this episode makes me imagine how intriguing it would have been to take a college course that you instructed. Did you give that up because of the trend toward socialism and Marxism on college campuses?

I'm a college student and no expert. I just took macroeconomics, so I've had a 500 mile up top view exposure rather than any kind of deep understanding. That said, one of the principles that made sense to me is the idea of specialization and economies of scale to bring better products at a lower price, while freeing up more people from basic subsistence work to pursue industry. This combination increases productivity. Growing your own tobacco I think would result in inefficiency. How for example am I to create the high quality blends with elements grown all over the world using specialized genetics and knowledge in my backyard? I think the problem is the social incentives the government is trying to use to steer folk away from tobacco use and should be addressed in a democratic manner by electing officials who advocate your policy objectives.

Of note - the name is derived from my deployments to Afghanistan where radical jihadists kill "infidels." On that basis, it's a name I wear with pride.

Hi Alan, I like your channel. I agree with much of your insight. Here in Australia it has been illegal to grow tobacco since 2006. Tobacco products are taxed at an extraordinary rate and Federal excise is $1663.36 per kilo. This makes up over 65% of the cost of the product, and then there is a 10% GST! Taxes are justified by the Government as being in the interest of public health. Like I say, the Government never gives the people anything without something being surrendered. Public health care in Australia comes at the cost of being able to decide what your own health priorities are. Further Government controls over proposed digital currencies would also allow for restrictions on what you can spend your own money on. I have never tried a pipe but enjoy the very occasional cigar. Keep up the good work.

We’re the concept of planned obsolescence the govts fault? A concept which was started in manufacturing in the 50’s after the war when they found that things like appliances were lasting too long and women were not buying new stoves and refrigerators, cars and the likes. So they changed the metal quality and overall quality of the goods manufactured. Was that the govts fault or greed of the capitalist… because I do believe that was before the change in the tax laws.. when there was more balance for the middle class.

Oddly enough, Kirk supported the socialist candidate in the 1944 presidential election. He had an understandable rationale for opposing what he called "empire" candidates FDR and Dewey. We must recognize the date of this "oddity", and possibly excuse it, since Kirk was in his mid-twenties at the time and, presumably, still formulating his eventual philosophy. We must also recognize, however, the fact that Kirk supported Eugine McCarthy in the mid-seventies, despite Kirk having fully developed his conservative philosophy. From my recollection, it was not totally unheard of for true American conservatives and classic liberals to agree in rejecting the party of Nixon and Agnew.
