I am really thinking they ran into some issue with this cards drivers or tech. Hopefully they will improve the performance to what they announced. I am still excited for the card. Been on my local Microcenter trying to get the XTX Red Devil. Not interested in the reference card. But yeah, they need to clarify what is going on. Even if they end up admitting that they were not able to achieve what they announced due to unseen bugs or something.

It very clear that these cards have some architectural bug(s) being the “first” MCM GPU, hopefully drivers can fix or workaround these inherent flaws without compromising performance. I must agree that MLID is 100% correct with his assessment.

You sum up my issues almost entirely. They've been very transparent in the past with their claims and at times even over delivering on what they promised so to see how RDNA 3 launched was very disappointing for me. Not because the flagship is bad, it isn't, its very overpriced but it's not what they promised and they intentionally set out to deceive us demolishing a lot of good will they had, good will that set them apart from companies like Intel and Nvidia.
Seeing the AMD fanboys run around trying to defend this launch is just sad because they aren't helping anything other than their own emotions. We shouldn't have to wait for drivers, whenever if that that delivers on their promises and we shouldn't have to overclock our ram and undervolt our cards to meet their performance per watt claims and than turn around and overclock the cards to consume as much power as a 4090 to get somewhat close to what AMD promised. I mean how can the fanboys not see how absurd this is?

Any overclock should be a bonus, a cherry on top, something you may or may not be able to achieve on top of what was promised, but instead it's like AMD want PC gamers to beta test their chiplet design at a high premium? It's disappointing and goes to show that these companies are all the same in the end and marketing is made up of half truths and deception. I hope it was worth it to get that positive coverage and hype and now face the blowback and disappointment when it didn't have to be this way. The 7900XTX is still a pretty good card and they have made solid ray tracing improvements but all they had to do is be somewhat honest and mayeb delay the cards to fix any possible issues there may be.

The reviewers love this "cost per frame" metric, by averaging a bunch of random games... However it says absolutely nothing about your personal experience. For example - are you playing competative games and want the highest fps, or single player games, where you want the best looks with ray tracing and upscaling? Or maybe you are interested in energy efficiency? Or maybe driver stability with your setup? Or maybe you use your video card with professional software? How long you will be actually happy with this card?

Otherwise, my opinion is that AMD messed up this generation, just like Intel did. This will not stop them to overprice RDNA3, just like Intel overpriced ARC. They will sell whatever they can, not overproducing, and move on. I wouldn't touch these cards, since they probably have serious hardware issues, and its not clear how well the drivers will work in future. When they move to new architecture, nobody will support specific "hacks" and "patches" for the previous generation.

Maybe they won't work with you because you are unreasonable. You have a lot of unreasonable complaints that makes your point hard to find. Maybe it's just me, but I heard and say "it completes with 4080" and it certainly does.

Hardware unboxed did one of the absolute worst reviews out of the bunch. To be fair the reviews for the cards were different from every reviewer, the numbers completely all over the field but their showing was one of the absolute worst. Other outlets who used different cpu/ram combos had the 7900xtx trading blows with the 4090, winning in some cases in 4k. The overclocking headroom is also quite amazing. I would like to see some of the big channels review the AIB cards/ overclocked so more people can see the true potential of these cards. EDIT, I dont care who "wins" this generation. No one wins in my eyes since cards are now so fckin expensive. No matter what amd releases or nvidia people wont be happy. Nvidia is expensive, they have a MUCH larger business with much higher overhead, AMD is quite small compared to nvidia so them even being in the same ballpark as nvidias top offerings is quite amazing. All companies are going to tell the public whatever puts them in the best light, if you just ignore all the publicity and look at stuff for what it is youd be a much happier consumer

AMD launched a product that is buggy at the hardware level with inconsistent clocks and high power consumption. Despite all that, they had the audacity to lie and launch these cards at that ridiculous pricing thinking they are doing gamers a favor by slightly undercutting the 4080. AMD deserves to be thrashed for their decision and not changing their ways will keep them losing market share no matter how good of a product they launch.

I'm not disagreeing about the deceptive marketing claims, but it definitely seems like AMD is the lesser of 2 evils in this situation (AMD + Nvidia). Prices really need to go down for GPUs; where they are at today is outrageous.

Did the overclockers dream/ guy came back to AMD? AMD definitely didnt deliver against the 4090 but i think they delivered against the 4080. the 7900xtx will also improve with driver optimizations. i am pretty sure amd did not work out all the bugs with their new chiplet gpu design

Morale of the story: never trust PR and unsubstantiated marketing material. Wait for reviews, wait for street price to measure against reviewed/verified performance before making a move.

Unfortunately AMD won't be punished on the market, their cards are cheap enough that people don't care and they've been sold out in hours. And you can still buy a 4080... So I guess price is more important than lies end disappointing performance.

I’ve been trying to upgrade from my 2070 Super since the 3080 launch. Of course I wasn’t able to get one of those at MSRP and I wasn’t willing to pay 2-3 times the retail price so I waited. After seeing how the XTX launch went, I decided to just buy a 6950XT. The prices had come down substantially since it was released and since I play on a 1440p ultrawide, I don’t really need bleeding edge halo product horsepower. I just didn’t feel like refreshing landing pages for days or weeks just to get a marginally better card for significantly more money.

Hardware unboxed only use ddr4 and 5800x3d.
Chuck a am5 and ddr5 in and will be so much better.
Also pre release drivers.

Lol people actually think they gonna just chuck in a new gen gpu on a 5 yr old build and be like "omg getting shit performance"....seems like a consumer issue. Cant just upgrade 1 thing lol

Im suprised amd didn't actually use the 7950x

Also hardware unboxed build also shows 7900xtx beating the 4090 by 60fps in mw2

I respect the engineers at AMD, but can't stand the head of Radeon team like Scott Herkelman and Frank Azor. Cherry picking benchmarks and overexaggerating performance claims. I've always been an Nvidia fan, and this just ensures I'll probably never buy an AMD product even if it's on par with Nvidia.

And that Hardware Unboxed numbers were generated using a 5800x3D with SAM On! That's not even an "apples to apples" comparison vs the 4080/4090 to which both cannot benefit using SAM. The ones I saw valid were from Gamer's Nexus and Jarrod's Tech, both channels used a 13th gen Intel, which showed, in most of their tests, the 7900xtx does not surpass the 4080 in terms of rasterization on games.

If only AMD would deliver what they hoped to deliver... 6950xt + 56% = 92% of 4090 as we had (6900xt vs 3090) and 6800xt + 56% = 4080
Instead they delivered 6950xt + 34% = 7900xtx and 6800xt + 34% = 7900xt (wrongly named and wrongly priced)
Something went terribly wrong with RDNA3.

@jinx20001 - 18.12.2022 01:29

the part i dont understand is the 7900xtx is a very good card, why lie about it, in raster it clearly competes with a 4080 and is cheaper... its cheaper for a reason though clearly, worse RT, no DLSS, no DLSS 3 competitor and for who knows how long, worse efficiency, arguably less consistent drivers, but the hardware is still solid.

the 4080 is clearly the better product all round but nvidia know that and you have to pay for that. AMD's biggest mistake was not having a 4090 competitor, and worse still it looks like the 7900xtx was intended to be that card and there had to be a big change of plan when the 4090 actually dropped, i mean it has 24gb of useless memory for gaming, it was a clear 4090 competitor and i guess they just fell incredibly short... AMD need that card for the sake of brand reputation and the 7900xtx performing like a 80 class nvidia card is a blow.
