This barbaric custom was revived by the first emperor of Ming Dynasty but abolished by the 4th one because his own mother was almost included in the list. The thought that he could have been an orphan caused him to abolish the custom. He was not the original crowned prince. His mother should have been the first Empress but was only promoted after the demise of the first Empress. It was quite a complex and intriguing bit of history

The idea was to ensure the emperor could get an heir, but most of these girls would never even see the emperor let alone have his baby. Like 50 should be the max, and even that would still be a breeding ground for drama.
