Pro Wrestling (NES) Playthrough

A playthrough of Nintendo's 1987 wrestling game for the NES, Pro Wrestling.

For how popular professional wrestling and video games had become by the late eighties, you'd think that gamers who wanted to live out their power fantasies through a d-pad would've been spoilt for choice.

That wasn't really the case, though. Not on the NES, at least. 1986 saw the release of M.U.S.C.L.E. (https://youtu.be/oXQ-uB00Sk4) and Tag Team Wrestling (https://youtu.be/XK8ImwALae8) in North America. In many people's minds, the less said about those games, the better off we all would be.

But once Nintendo applied their magic touch to the genre, things changed. Pro Wrestling, the NES's third wrestling title, was immediately hailed as the genre's new gold standard when it dropped in early 1987.

It had everything a fan could want. It had a roster of six colorful characters, each with their own fighting styles and signature moves. The controls were smooth and intuitive. Wrestlers could grapple, attack off the turn buckle, or take the action outside the ring. A referee and a cameraman both actively followed the action, and the crowd would go wild when a winner was declared.

What really clinched it for me as a kid was seeing The Amazon taking a bite out of his opponent's face. (Someone at Capcom apparently thought the same - you can't tell me that Blanka wasn't born out of someone's love of this game!)

Pro Wrestling wasn't the first wrestling game to do the things that it did, but it was the first that brought them together in a fun, accessible way that faithfully represented the spirit of the sport. It's simple, but it's about as perfect a game as you could ask for.
