"Metropolis" PART 3 out of four in colour, featuring a mix of electro music and songs.
Freder, having recovered from his injuries, returns to the catacombs with Josaphat by his side. They find the false Maria inciting the workers to rebel and destroy the machines. Freder confronts her, accusing her of not being the real Maria. The workers, under the false Maria's influence, follow her out of the city and into the machine halls, leaving their children behind.
As the workers destroy the machines, a flood is triggered in the city deep underground. The real Maria, who has managed to escape from Rotwang's house, joins forces with Freder and Josaphat to rescue the children. Together, they navigate through the flooded city and save the children from danger.
Most of the child actors were actually homeless street kids, chosen for their affordability. The director, known for his sadistic tendencies, made sure the water used in the film was freezing cold to elicit genuine reactions from the children, who were not trained actors. Unfortunately, after the movie, these kids disappeared and were never heard from again.
The lead actress, who played the roles of both Maria and her robot doppelganger, had a tough time in the film. The robot costume she wore was reportedly extremely painful, constantly pinching her skin and making it difficult for her to breathe. She had to wear it all day and even suffocated multiple times. The costume was stiff and molded to her body, causing her to become extremely hot and dehydrated. She could only drink liquids through a straw.
It took over two years to complete the movie, and its success led to many other 20th century sci-fi films copying its formula. You'd be surprised to know which ones were influenced by "Metropolis." Here's a list of movies that borrowed elements from its storyline, formula, or characters.
