Okay, I am only halfway through, but he just implied that researchers with a bias may have consciously or unconsciously run studies or conducted a meta analysis of selected studies, in a way that resulted in a conclusion that was basically exactly what they had hoped would be the conclusion before they even started out. (At least this is my bad paraphrasing of what Dr. Prasad said.)
So isn't this really happening in a majority of studies that are conducted, and not just in this alcohol controversy. And then shouldn't it be a scandal that studies get used as propaganda ???
I have never drunk alcohol. I'm an atheist, I don't have any diseases preventing me from drinking and prices are also not an obstacle. I have a degree and much above average salary. I simply think that drinking something that seems to be poison is irresponsible, especially since I observed drunk people many times and it wasn't fun. :D I like your videos but repeating these stereotypes again and again is not good.
ОтветитьGreat video! I also think its important to be able to hold 2 ideas at once, especially as a doctor. This meaning that even when there is great evidence for something you can still choose not to abide by it. For instance, a doctor who chooses to smoke cigarettes should be able to objectively state to his patients that smoking cigarettes poses certain health risks etc, and he should still be able to smoke cigarettes if he wishes.
In this case, even if there was absolutely irrefutable evidence through hundreds of RCTs that alcohol at any consumption level increased cancer risk by 50%, people should still be able to make the choice to be able to drink alcohol.
You're performing a public service!
ОтветитьI'm only 20 mins in but so far, no mention of diet. Most heavy'ish drinkers I know haven't got the best diet/nutrition. Some substitute food (and w a t e r intake) with alcoholic beverages. Yet another factor that would impact/skew results in these studies, seems to me.
ОтветитьVery reasonable analysis on alcohol. Thank you.
ОтветитьDr. Prasad. I’m hilarious, work in the industry and would love to host your next dinner party. I also make a great old fashioned
ОтветитьIf you're not binge drinking, alcohol breaks down to beta hydroxybutyrate, which has shown amazing benefits across the body. As with everything, the poison is in the dose. You wouldn't advise people to not breathe oxygen at all just because increasing concentrations of oxygen cause oxidative stress.
ОтветитьIf cancer is the main thing you're concerned about in relation to the pharmacological, toxicological, gut microbiome, immunological, neuropathological, psychological, interpersonal, legal, sleep homeostasis, and well-established morality-risks associated with EtOH consumption, then you're likely undermining 90% of the research that could be important to consider. This presentation does well to improve sociocultural sophistication in relation to some key issues that can assist in the area of harm reduction and reducing disease risk in those particularly susceptible, but represents only a superficial appraisal of a complex topic that's difficult to address without one's personal affinity and rationalizations influencing the process.
ОтветитьAlcohol is a toxin. There is no way moderate to heavy drinking isn't harmful. What about what it does to the brain? Dr. Huberman has a 2 hour video on the harms of alcohol.
ОтветитьI wanna go to his dinner party! I'll bring a bottle of cabernet!
ОтветитьThere’s also a lot of second hand smoke in bars in rural areas with poor ventilation. This isn’t really a thing in major cities anymore but that could explain why drinkers who don’t smoke are still dying of lung cancer.
ОтветитьNever mind cancer. That’s far from the only issue with alcohol. Alcohol is a neurotoxin. Dr. Prasad may have a lot of brain cells to spare, but I don’t. Alcohol also (along with coffee/chocolate/caffeine, vinegar, and other fermented foods) disintegrates the bones and teeth from the inside out. My advice, which I follow myself, is to avoid it.
ОтветитьPlease invite me to dinner when you are serving the 250.00 bottles.
ОтветитьNo it’s not. Mentally anyway. Physically I would think it’s not great. Being a recovering alcoholic I know how terrible it can be. Blacking out, doing things I would never do sober. It ruined my life. I lost many friends because I was such a jerk to them and I really can’t blame them. Every time I got in trouble I was drunk. I’ve never been in trouble when I was sober. Waking up in a jail cell having no idea why I was there and no idea what I had done. I believe alcohol is the worst drug. When I took other drugs I always was in control of my actions
ОтветитьTake a shot every time he says “dinkers”.
ОтветитьVery well said!
ОтветитьPlease consider adding chapters to your video. You raise interesting points, but viewers are required to watch you dissect reports in great detail in order to hear them. Having the option to navigate straight to your main points and summaries would be helpful to many. Thank you.
Ответитьhaha once and for all! _JC
Ответитьim drunk right now, & ive never felt better! _JC
Ответитьit would be real funny...if you got cancer...one of them organs....Uk is full of alkis,... and have got cancers .....keep talking crap...u will only convince drinkers.
ОтветитьLove it! Great video!
Try this Interstellar Negroni.
1/3 Top Shelf Gin (you choose)
1/3 Storico Vermouth di Torino Cocchi

Absinthe rinse
Green Chartreuse splash
Flamed lemon peel
In Serbia we have rakia. We use it as medicine for a bunch of things but it's a fruit brandy
ОтветитьHaha I got a kick out of being called “very weird” so many times
ОтветитьI've had expensive cabernet, I've had mad dog 2020. I'll take the mad dog! Stop being a wine snobby Vinay! 😂
I'm obviously ok with humor, invite me to your next dinner party lol! Keep up the good work Vinay! 😎
Vinay, sometimes you piss me off and I disagree with you. That’s probably good! You remain the smartest and most grounded voice in the epi space and I wish more researchers and public health officials thought like you.
ОтветитьLike you do with your other rants , you do your own version of “the Weave” !
ОтветитьJust tell us you're an alcoholic lol. Reminds me of that South Park episode where Randy is using alcohol tastings as an excuse to drink because it's classy.
Ответить2 bottles of wine a day gang! Let's gooo...
ОтветитьI could listen to this guy all day.
ОтветитьWhat about alcohol and brain swelling, diabetes etc?
ОтветитьYour brilliance is well under appreciated, may that change in short order. Raising a glass to you!
Ответитьthis Maddog 2020 slander will not stand, sir! But jokes aside, great breakdown, thanks.
ОтветитьExcellent
ОтветитьA year and a half alcohol-free…one of the best things I ever did. Quitting smoking in my 20s was the other best thing. ❤
ОтветитьI agree with ditching the nutritional epidemiology. 💯
ОтветитьWait a minute, is that the pareto distribution AGAIN in alcohol consumption?
I swear it's inescapable
I need an invite to a VP dinner party!
ОтветитьHooooooold up, what’s wrong with jalapeños and habaneros in alcohol??? Spicy cocktails are my current obsession (responsibility, in moderation, of course 😅) — was that a serious medical recommendation, or just a joke?
ОтветитьNumber 22: If you continue to mention only Napa wines (Especially Cabernet Sauvignon) and ignore other California AVAs along with French, Italian, Spanish wines etc ; You need to Force yourself out of the Napa bubble because you are missing some incredible wines and many are far superior to Napa cabernets at a fraction of the cost.😊
ОтветитьIm biased because I have alcohol related dementia at age 44. I think effects on the brain and dementia should be looked at more. Some recent studies which I’m sure have their flaws show pretty grim results. A French study showed a majority of early onset dementia cases involved heavy alcohol use or AUD. Another study looks at brain MRIs:
“ Heavy alcohol consumption has been associated with brain atrophy, neuronal loss, and poorer white matter fiber integrity. However, there is conflicting evidence on whether light-to-moderate alcohol consumption shows similar negative associations with brain structure. To address this, we examine the associations between alcohol intake and brain structure using multimodal imaging data from 36,678 generally healthy middle-aged and older adults from the UK Biobank, controlling for numerous potential confounds. Consistent with prior literature, we find negative associations between alcohol intake and brain macrostructure and microstructure. Specifically, alcohol intake is negatively associated with global brain volume measures, regional gray matter volumes, and white matter microstructure. Here, we show that the negative associations between alcohol intake and brain macrostructure and microstructure are already apparent in individuals consuming an average of only one to two daily alcohol units, and become stronger as alcohol intake increases.”
Thank you for your candid and accountable form of presentation! Would you please look at the data on individual vaccines and talk about your change in perspective on a covid vaccine and or others? I know that you avidly support some and have come out assertively on covid in the data that was ignored, redacted, diminished and destroyed... I'm curious if that has driven you to look into other areas that the government may be has lied to us on vaccines? I like the idea of looking at each individual vaccine but it's overwhelming when there's 70 of them that they want us to take. I'm just another parent who are is on the side of safety and to me it seems like I cannot trust very many sources. Even sources that support my side I've noticed can have biases and I am not one to overlook something just because it's on my side of the argument. I don't even know what side of the argument I'm on most of the time. I just want information. Real information
ОтветитьI stick to red wine with dinner. I do not drink beer, white wines, or hard liquors or smoke. I’m 48, 5’3, and 115 lbs, and have a fasting glucose of 81. I try to eat healthy daily and I enjoy my red wine.
Ответить13!!!
ОтветитьI don't disagree that the study has limitations, but your study is just as limited. Just because you have stratified groups and randomize them to the suggestion that they drink more, does not mean they will actually change their drinking. Further the groups you created are just as arbitrary as the study you mentioned. Your study is not randomizing to an actual condition where they drink more. There is so much non-normal distribution variability in drinking how are you going to account for that. How about people that spontaneously change categories due other factors. Additionally, you talk of modeling causality, how exactly are you going to do that. How do you know your mental health factor is not a contributor and not an outcome of the drinking. I could go on and on with the limitations. I get it your smart guy but there is an entire science in this area, and if said study was so easy to do someone would have done it. However, longitudinal cohort studies that monitor a lot variables are hard to do for fiscal and about a million other reasons. This mostly just shows that just because you are smart in one area does not mean you can apply it a whole other area e.g., Addictions.
ОтветитьI don't drink because, as a kid, I saw how booze ruined families and turned people into fools. I believe most politicians have pickled their brains. I like Trump because he doesn't drink and has great kids. I do, very occasionally, use wine, beer, and whiskey in my cooking.
ОтветитьDude is still upset he never got admitted into Harvard, his ego decided to throw the entire medical profession under the bus.
