Moving from VMware. Currently testing several hypervisors. First one eliminated? Hyper-V. Tomorrow we test Proxmox. Can't wait for XCP-NG! The support goes in the plus category.

XCPNG is not an alternative to VMware , xcpng still rely on that control domain Debian ... Useless , it must have a full fledged features API that can manage hypervisor like something similar to VMware vsphere or similar from other server, now all your clients and admin in same server for managing it .. what a funny business... Hypervisor is hypervisor

i can truly understand microsoft.. there is just no reason for the free product. if you want to run windows you have already a license and the codebases are signifcant different so it would be a waste of money.. if you don't run any windows VMs hyper-v just is not as good as the alternatives so i get you when you say it's a bad product except it isn't it's still the best form to virtualize windows servers because of the great integration.

I have been working with multiple hypervisors throughout my career. I would say proxmox is way better than anything else i have used. I have been using it for past 5 years on production environment. Proxmox is a beast without a doubt as long as you spend enough time designing everything.

I have tried xcp-ng, im not a fan of the kind of PCI passthrough available with it.

i would say, considering proxmox has great partnerships nowadays with companies like 45drives, which will make it better and better.

I'm a little late haha, I work in a cloud company, and we mainly use VMware for our virtualization (that thing is ridiculously expensive now) and well as a panic solution the manager decided to go hyper V, which we all hate.

Other than the solutions you showed here which i tried to make them see as well there also Nutanix, the entry to Nutanix as a business is expensive. You need to buy servers from them and that's how you get that visualization, though at the same time 1 ISP company that transferred to Nutanix said they'd never look back at VMware.

I think a big issue in the cloud industry is that good man power that knows what they are doing is rare, when I started I was just help desk now I'm Tier 2 help desk, but I'm watching the manager all alone with some very complicated issues, hiring another person with his level of expertise would be very expensive as well.

That really pushes away solutions like Apache cloudstack (which was really fun setting up) and OpenStack, it requires too much work in a role that already has a lot of work just dealing with clients.

And well the second issue other than many is your competition is fierce.

In all honesty I think other than having a software like Nutanix or xcp-ng where you can blame the vendor and give the answer to the client, or being big enough to afford a whole team to manage openstack; there's not much place in the cloud industry.

Ps. proxnox is fine same with ovirt and some other fun virtualization managers but in a business environment where someone tells you they want answers yesterday, saying well you see in Germany it's 4:20pm is a quick and easy way to lose a client.

I was a VMware Engineer for 10 years and Broadcom has destroyed them. There's very few jobs left requiring VMware as everyone is jumping ship to Azure, AWS and Google Cloud, due to renewal costs being 10x more expensive. What's it's done for me is its expedited my long term plans to move to Linux.

I use good old KVM at home because... I've used it for 10+ years after switching from my old free VMWare install. At work I've always used VMWare. Thankfully, at my current job, I am not involved as much in virtualization anymore - just Linux. I setup an XCP-NG server at the last job, but there was no sense of urgency at the time because the Broadcom sale was years away. I just setup XCP-NG at home over the weekend but am not ready to migrate my entire home server to it. Maybe when it's actually time for a new server I will consider it. My only complaints so far is that it's laid out so differently from other virtualization environments that it's hard for me to find what I want. Fortunately, XCP-NG Center helps a bit with that. Must be another UI team on that vs. XOA.

I really wanted to push XCP-NG at work but we do DRaaS and have numerous VM's larger than 2TB which seems to be the limit for XCP-NG and the .vhd format. I'm sure it's great for hosting and numerous other scenarios but it was a non-starter for us just for that reason.

I moved my home HPE DL360 Gen9 off of ESXi a few weeks ago to Proxmox. I exported 8 VM's to external storage, installed Proxmox and reimported them within the same day. The uncomplicated VM's were up and running the same day. PCI passthrough took some extra reading and research. I was struck by Proxmox's ease of setup and configuration. I'm blown away at how much faster all of the VM's run. Wish I had recorded some statistics before I migrated. I'm guessing that the increased speed is due to ZFS on the storage pools, vs the old controller RAID based storage on vmware.

So, I've been looking around -- with the Broadcom/VMware new pricing plan, for us, for 3 servers with duel processors that have 12 cores each, it's $3800.00 for a Yr. Support for XCP-NG for equivalent support is $4000.00 per Yr, and support for Proxmox (from them) was about the same. Given the current support prices I cannot see a good reason to dump VMware and all the headaches that come along with it. For a home lab - self supported, it makes perfect sense to to migrate.

I love proxmox, mainly for linux purposes, however I dont feel the need to rely on support from them because I dont do out of the ordinary for proxmox customizations.
I am happy with proxmox due to the networking abilities it gives me, I currently run 3 Dell Poweredge servers each with a proxmox installation and they all have quad ethernet nic's. LACP is a breeze to configure for proxmox by far, you can also LACP 10g as well sfp connections with proxmox so long as the OS recognizes the cards in the networking settings.

Thumbs up for XCP-ng. We’re a small VMware customer, our renewals for this year have come in around 5x more expensive, so I’m currently persuading management to consider the Vates support model, exactly because of their responsiveness and engagement (first hand experience of that in my home lab).
Good, informative video Tom! 👍🏻

I started homelab life on UnRaid about 6 or 7 years ago, then moved to Proxmox in an attempt to things 'properly' about 3-4 years ago and as of a few weeks ago have migrated over to XCP-NG (although I run XO on a Proxmox VM lol).

So far I do like quite a lot of XCP-NG/XO, multiple networks are dead easy, the ability to just rename and tag anything anywhere is really handy and the UI Design is good, almost 'toy' like if that makes sense. The downsides I find are navigation can be a challenge, would love a search but I have those issues sometimes in Proxmox to (like the other day completely blanked on where the hell ISO Images were)

Overall, I'm enjoying XCP-NG so far currently playing around with 2 Dell Mini 7060s with 8500T/32gb Ram with a 3rd on the way to test out HA. As a bonus passing through the Intel GPU was dead easy, managed to do add it and cycle the VM before Plex even started buffering.

I'm helpful for the future for both Proxmox and XCP-NG - I suspect alot of people are put off xcp-ng simply because it doesn't come with an interface, with the Lite interface coming I can see it being a great and simply option for newbies, especially as I feel we are entering the 3rd age of self hosting media and data with the rise of breaches, AI scraping, subscription costs etc.

I prefer Xen over KVM, which are basically the choices when you decide between XCP or Promox. Xen is far more stable for enterprise or heavy workloads that require top-notch isolation. KVM's VM's are less stable in that regard, and it's absolutely possible for a guest performing badly to affect other guests or bring down the entire node.

This is unheard with Xen which its main purpose was always to compete against VmWare. KVM has more tools and is far more popular, Xen is more complicated from an IT standpoint to master. KVM is also lighter and faster on hardware resources for each guest but at the cost of some stability. XCP is basically the open-source edition of XenServer which is an enterprise product. XenSever from Citrix was actually free, until they made some awkward license changes, and so XCP was born. In the end, both are open source, and you are just picking the tools on top of them.

The other main choices in this regard are that XCP runs on RHEL and Promox on Debian as Dom0. Debian is not a popular choice for server hardware because, as a pure open-source distro, they refuse to ship any proprietary code, which means no drivers and poor hardware compatibility. This makes XCP a better option for server grade hardware. I guess this is the reason why XCP might be more popular in the datacenter and Promox for lab testing.

I just moved over to Proxmox from ESXi for our office.

We're just a small install though with only 2 nodes in the HA Cluster.

I've been using this setup at home for almost 2 years now and it's been good.

The only thing I add to the base install is apcupsd.

I did have to add a cron job to run a bash script to control the fans in the R730XD node as 53% with an IT Mode H330 Mini was just too loud for our environment when they didn't need to run that fast to keep the system cool.

I also had to find a workaround for our new Supermicro EPYC 7743P system to manually refresh the physical drive listing in Proxmox as it wasn't working to just hit the Refresh button for some reason.
