The reason why it's better to build an American phone in China is because China has cheap labor, which in turn means cheaper phones.

Making money is not the same as keeping it there is a reason why investments aren't well taught in schools, the examples you gave are well stationed, the market crisis gave me my first millions, people shy away from hard times, I embrace them.. well at least my advisor does lol.

In some cases intrinsic value does play a role, doesn't it? The us dollar is accepted as payment al around the world making it convinient, besides it holds its value relatively well compared to other currencies. I would say that makes it more "valuable", not in a literal sense. Another example would be that of a currency with a high inflation rate, although the value today may be the same, later on it finds itself losing value against other currencies.

-2% in unskilled wages each year doesn't sound like much but that was the equivalent of 3-4 years of pay rises in care. We used to get 0-1% each year. Magnify that over the years when compared to inflation and we saw 20% decrease in standard of living over the time I worked in a care home (keeping in mind this was with people who already earn rubbish). What made this hardest is that even though this has now finally been acknowledged by the Bank of England, prior to that, any time someone brought this up on TV, they would be shouted down as racist.

I think a lot of companies are moving away from China just due to politics but many use it as a scapegoat for the fact that although china has unlimited infrastructure skilled and low skilled labour it's growth in economy and wages and new policy making in favor of the nation's wellbeing makes all of the cheap goods not so cheap no more
