I don't think men singing falsetto is historical in Bach. For evidence, women have much finer control in that range which Bach would have taken advantage of, and there are many female - male duets in the cantatas that create a romantic analogy to the content of the text

Beautiful performance, worthy of this monument of Western music. Thank you to the Philippe Herreweghe, to the brilliant ensemble and to the uploader. I only wish the subtitles for the non-Biblical text hadn't been a rhyming translation. So much of the meaning was distorted.

Herreweghe is a conductor who is a class of his own when it comes to sacred works! This performance is utterly superb, both soloists & choir and orchestra putting their heart & soul into every bar of this divine music of the immortal JS Bach! Danke, merci.

A great performance. Some of the English subtitles are a bit off though. For example "frommes Weib" is not a "pitying woman", but a "pious woman", etc. "Treu" is not "loving", it means "loyal". If you subtitle a video like this, you should take great care that you are accurate when translating.

Having just read The Great Passion by James Runcie (I recommend) listening to the work was essential! A stunning performance here and the addition of subtitiles makes it doubly meaningful for me, and indeed any English speaking believer.
