The winners, the British and the Allies, drew up new borders, as they had the right to. They started being rulers of the land in 1917. They had planned on leaving in 1947.
When the Arabs decided from the get-go they wanted to obliterate the Jewish people, there was a war. Israel won in 1948 and became a Nation.
They were the major developers in the area as they continue to be.
