I've loved and watched and rewatched musical movies made from the 1930s to the 1960s. I remember seeing the original West Side Story on TV in the mid-70s and thinking how different and modern it looked even 15 years after it was made. I'm interested to see if the new movie makes as much of an impact.

Wow the new one looks bad. Framing, lens flares, shaky-cam, blueness everywhere and with the upcoming videos, the singing seems just okay. Spielberg ones seems really boring and generic. While 1961 seems like a musical? I would definitely check out the older one.

I hated the performances of Bernardo and Riff in the 2021 version (I blame Spielberg, not the actors obviously). They were just egotistical brutes, in contrast to their classy and subtle counterparts in the 1961 version.

The remake surpassed the original. Spielberg has done it.

This movie is going to bomb. You don't remake a classic and you certainly don't try to correct perceived flaws in said classics. This was foolhardy...

I’m not a musical fan. The amount i like you could count on one hand. West Side Story is one of those i remember watching as a kid on tv.. i don’t hate it,it’s kind of okay to me. But when i heard we were getting a remake,i was,okay this will definitely be worth a watch. My wife’s favourite genre is musical and i was really looking forward to watching it on the big screen…that’s not going to happen,not because of me..my wife doesn’t want to go and watch..why, because of covid. There’s to many people who don’t care and won’t wear masks.
As i said,I’m not a musical fan,but I’m gutted we won’t watch this on the big screen

Nothing can compare with the 1961 version...BUT. They did a Great job!! Wonderful that the Puerto Ricans are actually played by Puerto Ricans this time.

I cant stop looking at the 1961 version. So much more pleasing to the eye. Think I'll go watch that version again. Classic is best.

I will see the movie but from these trailers I guess the old one remains a favorite for me.

After seeing this 3 times already, and yes I am a huge fan of the older movie, all I can say is why are we comparing at all? Both are equally good! Are there some things I liked better in the old movie, yes. But same with the new one. Each one is unique in its own way.
The critics are wrong about the 2021 version, it is wonderful. If all you are going to do is compare it to the old movie than don't see it. They are not the same film!
2021 Great lighting, cinematography, THE ORCHESTRA, the acting, the singing, and the dancing!! All were great! This cast and crew definitely gave 100% and it's really sad that people who haven't even given a chance are trashing it.
As for those complaining about Ansel's dancing.....he literally dances twice. Hardly at all.
The Spanish that is spoken, very easy to see/feel the emotion and what they are saying. Especially if you've seen the older movie.

So many things to compare which gets us probably to a draw. I grew up seeing the 1961 version when it came out. Loved Natalie Wood, but Rachel Ziegler was born to play Maria. The 1961 version still feels edgier to me and that is probably due to Jerome Robbins. The deal is that the new film is based on the 1957 Original Cast, so it gets bumpy comparing 1961 and 2021. Lastly, call me crazy, but the new Tony resembles Marlon Brando (taller version).

I love West Side Story 2021 because you can see how Maria and her family are Puerto Rico accurate but the old one is good to remember just a classic but what the hell, they’re both good and everyone deserved it.

West side story is a bit like Romeo and Juliet except this one is on New York
