The explanation is simple: we take out all the anger we build up by being nice in warfare. Gotta steam off somehow

The tough Canadians of yesteryear are a very different breed compared to the current crop raised on participation trophies. Take away cellphones and wi fi and todays Canadians think it is cruel and unusual punishment.

There is a great quote, I don't remember who said it but it describes the Canadians perfect. "The capacity of one's love will reflect their potential for rage" the Canadians took everything personally.

Canadians are polite, not nice. The difference is people who are polite are capable of great violence. While folks who are simply "nice" can't do much.

You're referring to a time long long ago. I'm afraid that train has has sailed. Canada is populated by woke soy suckers
and sheeplemmings that would perish in days if they couldn't watch Netflix and order door dash.
Nice try though

In the early 1900s most Canadians had almost nothing, Canada and Newfoundland were also brought into the war by Britain and not by choice.

I suspect that if you take a bunch of farmers who are basically kids and young men away from their families and work they're going to do whatever it takes to get back home.

Different war, but watch The Devil's Brigade.

when they say this(fearsome warrior ) ...its French Canadian...but the king and queen of British don't want people to know it in order to give all the credits to English people. Soldier Ryan never existed ...American and English Canadian where hiding behind during all hard battle on the second war. Story is been told by the winners ...but French Canadian where used and dumped ..like always.all what you think was your best shot ....is not ..do you research

Canuck/Fire Fighter here. Canadians inherited the british sense of duty and professionalism. We also come from a land where geography, fauna and climate actively try to kill us ( my friend was actually mauled half to death bear hunting last month). We are reluctant to get involved - but when we accept a task we pretty much accept that we will die seeing it through - because if its not us - it will fall to one of our buddies to carry out.

Canuck here. Read William Stevensons biography - A Man Named Intrepid. Born in Manitoba he was one of the first flying aces. He was shot down and made a POW. He escaped german prison and made it home with a new invention "ariel maps". He became a millionaire steel maganate. He convinced Roosevelt to support Britain before the americans joined the war. He literally wrote the OSS handbook which became the CIA and Mi5 training manual. He was responsible for coordinating the allied capture of the German Enigma by polish troops and helped Blexhly break its code from Toronto. He was the real life inspiration for Ian Flemmings James Bond (Stevenson was flemmings CO). He retired with his own private submarine to barbados and when asked about if his biography was actually true said " Imagine if i could tell you what we actually got up to in the war".

Odd, it wasn't just the Canadians who conducted such fierce trench raids. Like many Commonwealth troops, some were recent immigrants from the UK and Ireland and joined the military in their respectively new homes in Canada, NZ, Australia, Rhodesia or South Africa and so on.
A similar thing happened in the second world war. This is something that happened to my family in both world wars. Brothers and cousins would be in allied forces but in Canadian, ANZAC and UK forces and one who was in the RN in WWI and USMC in WWII.

I heard the military school for officers was in the french canadian part of the dominion and most french officers rather wanted to serve as foot soldiers in the french canadian regiment instead of commanding english units.
The key to their efficacity was that when an officer went down there was no lack of cohesion as most were trained to lead. That lead to a lot of innovations on the field and remarkable results ie vimy and the belgium offensive that won the first war.

sigh, I think there might be a psychological reason for this. Sorry, but as American neighbours and "forced" refugees from Europe, even today, being Canadian passive aggressive humans from narcissistic roots isn't healthy. Survival meant everything. They were gangs. Canada is a weird place to live. Be nice or else?
