Cyclone Garance closes in on Reunion island

Cyclone Garance is rapidly intensifying in the southwest Indian Ocean, and is tracking closer to the Mascarene Islands. The main bands of the storm will reach Mauritius and Réunion in the next few hours, and the storm is likely to reach Category 3 major hurricane equivalent status. Class III warnings are in effect on Mauritius with warnings for Réunion, where winds of over 100mph (160kph) are possible along with very heavy rain.

Cyclone Honde is expected to reach Madagascar soon, and this much larger storm is likely to cause major rainfall issues in the southwesten part of the island. The storm is likely to stall over the area before turning back towards the south or west.

Cyclone Alfred looks like it is on the verge of strengthening once again too, in the Coral Sea. Forecasts are still uncertain about the future track, with some scenarios now calling for a landfall close to Brisbane next week. The threat to the Mackay region appears to be decreasing.
