A podcast detailing new research into the life of Francis Greville (1636/7-1658), 3rd Lord Brooke, and his portrait by artist John Hayls which survives at Warwick Castle.

New research into the little studied account books show that Francis lived an extravagant lifestyle, despite his puritan protestant background. This did not diminish during his studies at Oxford University where he attended Magdalen College with his younger brother Robert. Payments show that alongside buying books he spent vast amounts on drink, travel and musical gatherings which he hosted for his friends and the various University grandees. Furthermore, new research has revealed that his surviving portrait at Warwick Castle was painted by John Hayls (1600-1679), which is detailed and illustrated in this podcast.

This podcast was written and produced by Adam Busiakiewicz and Aaron Manning, historians of Warwick Castle and its Earls. For more information get in touch: [email protected] / [email protected]
