This really should have been a lot better than it turned out. Mitchum was a very credible Marlowe, you’ve got a great cast featuring James Stewart, Oliver Reed and Richard Boone. With it being made in the 70s they could include all the things omitted from the 40s version. It’s not terrible but it pales in comparison to the book and the Bogart version. I don’t understand why they relocated it to England and setting in contemporary (for the time) breaks the plot. The illicit pornography racket in the 1970s doesn’t work, by then it was available on the top shelves of newsagents.

Robert Reed and his friends, sexy group. They know what's groovy and 😎 cool🎉. They get the point as sure as the tongue coalesces........no not a piece of meat per se. " May the marriage of two minds admit impediments" after all" it is an ever fixed mark that looks on tempests and is never shaken". Not Mark......but Ben, very sexy! Lively lovely film folks! You would think Nazi imbeciles would ve learned how much noise God can make! My pleasure, He says! The deafening imbecility and darkness of the intellect of Hitler never dictated it. The gift of sexuality was from God alone. Believe me! Shakespeare knew as Henry 8 was and is imbecile to because if he didn't say it, it wasn't so! Lol!💕❤ Chrissy Comey, Exupery

After the masterwork "Farewell, My Lovely" (1975), this updated adaptation of Raymond Chandler's "The Big Sleep" is a disappointment. While it's more faithful to the novel in some respects than the 1946 version, there's many problems with it. The changing of the setting to London (which I believe was done for budget reasons) was a mistake, and updating the setting to the 1970s (when it was filmed), whose idea was that? The actress who plays Carmen (Camilla here to make her sound more British, yet Candy Clark didn't hide her American accent) is so amatuerish, it's embarrassing. Robert Mitchum seemed to be sleepwalking throughout the entire thing. Joan Collins got the role of Alexis Carrington in "Dynasty" because of her performance here, so that's one good thing.

Oh My Gawd!!! Please please please promise me nobody will ever attempt Philip Marlowe in Blighty again! If flims had aerodynamics, this one 's a concrete swimming pool.

Although I admit a perverse pleasure in watching Michael Winner jamming 40's noir nto 70's kitsch London (I hope the neighbours didn't see me). How that man had a film career I've no idea, as butchers go we're lucky he didn't take up cosmetic surgery.

As for Mitchum & Stewart, how much Lew Grade flooded into their bank accounts to snooze across the pond on Concorde for this tosh is unknown, but I hope they enjoyed their ill-gotten gains!

The London location and modern day setting just doesn’t work. Marlow only works in LA in the 1940s and 1950s.

Why do so many Hollywood hacks think they can improve on Chandler? Marlowe in England, Marlowe in the '90s, Marlowe played by Danny Glover. All of it is a poor imitation of the original.

"he did 6 months for robbery " , not likely , mostly it is at least a few years [or used to be ] robbery is a serious crime even the unarmed kind , ie robbing person telling them to hand over with menace is serious though theft ie putting something in your pocket in a shop or persons house say ,is less serious as there has been no hold up ,

This is categorically not a good movie. The actors (apart from Mitchum) all sound like they’re reading their lines directly from the script, over the phone, while thinking of what they’ll be making for lunch later with ingredients bought with their paycheck. But I’m grateful for the upload because I still enjoyed watching it again after all these years. Winner was a dismal director, and it’s hard to believe Jerry Fielding scored The Wild Bunch and Straw Dogs when you listen to this dross.

Great cast. Great story. All spoiled by setting it in 1970s London. Not in the same league as Mitchum's Farewell My Lovely directed by Dick Richards in 1975. But then Michael Winner was never a great director, and died broke. He was also a nasty piece of work.
