There’s an old saying for which I can’t find the source. It goes something like, “long periods of boredom punctuated by moments of terror.” This sounds like a description of an ATC’s job.

It sounds abit like my brain which has got issues and id. like tbet t damage id could never do there job thed be millions killed in the skies its actually scary whats happening in the air i if flying never will would feel vetter in sky if there was a certical sepeeation by ours and bext plane cos its 4 or 5 mile than horizental of 300 metres to 500 netres which isnt a lot equivilnt which is equivilent if walking up my street

So I just went off on a tangent thinking about the large numbers caused by delays. If you delayed each person on earth by 13 minutes, the total of the delay would exceed the history of mankind (200,000 years)

ATC does loads more than helping pilots land and take off. They are always checking airspace. Think of them like a traffic light system for pilots

European airspace is insane .. you've got all those budget airlines hopping in between most cities, sometimes several times a day, at crazy cheap prices, making a lot of people opt to fly instead of taking the train, thus creating this unbelievable traffic... managing it is a work of art.

Little did they know that they would have a long vacay starting 2020.

I got a question and is not about how the ATC actually work but the truth is how do we get our private pilot licence,instrument rating and vehicles registration declaration..

I WORK AT THE AIRPORT AS A EQUIPMENT OPERATOR AND DRIVES TOW TRACTOR I REALLY APPRECIATE ALL THE STAFF AND RESPECTS THEM A LOT.....FROM TOP TO BOTTOM EACH ONE IS TIED UNDER THE STRICT TIME MANAGEMENT TO TRANSFER PASSENGERS SAFELY......TO THERE DESIRED DESTINATIONS....AND THE ATC JOB HATTS OFF TO YOULL WHO JUST WORK 24 BY 7 TAKING LOADS OF PRESSURE AND HANDLES THE INBOUND AND OUTBOUND AIRCRAFTS SO SMOOTHLY.....GOD BLESS ALL THE PEOPLE WHO ARE WORKING IN THE AVIATION INDUSTRY......

One of the annoying things about being a controller is that when everything is working well, we work our asses off behind the scenes and the flying public are overwhelmingly oblivious to the work going on they can't see to make it all happen. But on the rare occasion it all goes wrong... we get slaughtered by the public and in the press!

Air traffic control works by making sure that the plane get from one airport to another airport safely. The air traffic control would also work with the ground control to make sure that the plane get to the runway safely. Air traffic control doesn[t only work within their ariport, but they also work with the other airport to provide information about the flight, the sky, and other important aspect of each flight.

It would be interesting to hear about the US/Canadian equivalent of this — where the equivalent management centers are, how differences in regulations affect the process, and so forth. East-Asian (China, Japan, Indonesia, etc.) as well…

currently training as an ATC and in my last facility which is En-route Control or Area Control (ACC) wish me luck 🥺

It sounds kinda harsh, but this sounds like the kind of job we could eventually fully automate (not necessarily with AI either). Still, thanks to all the people who have helped and still are helping making this system a reality today, it's pretty amazing :)

There's an awesome game/simulator that attempts to replicate the stress of an air traffic controller on a busy day, it's called Endless ATC. Makes me wonder how fun it'd be to work this job. Also, maybe the worker shortage will mean a salary raise?

They need to make more pathways for people to get the education to do this. There's only one route now and I think most people who may have the aptitude and really be interested in doing this don't know how to.

Eurocontrol is not only an extremely important institution to ensure punctuality and efficiency but also for safety. Avoiding overcrowding and congestion of airspace is one of the most important factors in reducing the risk of accidents.

I just want to give a shout out to all the air traffic controllers around the world. I know usually the pilots are the highly praised and cheered (rightfully so), but air traffic controllers are also the unsung heroes for all of us getting safely from point A to B safely which rarely get the credit they deserve. Most of us don't even think about them when flying but they have such a crucial part.

This is one of the jobs that is not for everybody, you really must have nerves of steel and very sharp mind to deal with all that stress, pressure and responsibility where even a small mistake could lead to tragedy. I worked as a truck dispatcher for year and a half and it was such a stressful and demanding job so I can't imagine having to deal with planes and keep everything on track.
