Whiplash's Brilliant Editing - A Breakdown

I have 2 movie posters in my studio: Whiplash, and Raging Bull. When I saw Whiplash, it immediately reminded me of Raging Bull.

I love the movie, but the only interesting thin i got from this video on editing is relating it to raging bull

I've been binge watching this channel for two days. An interesting phenomena is that I want to listen to the tips and ideas that the video offers, but movies like this one don't interest me whatsoever. (My compliments to the directors, actors, editors who made it ).

How much ,how long and what do we study about editing in film school ? anyone with answer !

The rising and falling tension is exactly how I felt watching this whole movie. I call it triggered anxiety. Lol

I've had teachers like this... to somewhat a lesser degree. Purposefully antagonistic. Sarcastic. At the time it was really disorienting and confusing. Really hard to tell what he wanted. Today, I would look Fletcher in the eye and say, you yell at me one more time and I will personally shove these sticks up your ass.. now... shall we get on with this. Of course I'd probably get my ass thrown out, but at least I didn't lose my dignity.

This movie gave me so much anxiety from a person who used to be in a marching band.

I'm shocked. for me this is a very ugly film and an example of poor editing. I probably have no taste.

Hi Sven, I have to admit I got intrigued about the movie after this video, so one week later I watched it. The film was great; and yes it is like Rocky in a jazz band.
The reason why I am writing here is that I saw many things I would personally consider bad things in a movie, and I get surprised it won an Oscar as "best edition".
I saw a couple of cuts where the head's position does not match with the next frame, but the worst I found is a reverse (a .gif wise) in the middle of a sequence to make it last longer.
Have you seen it?

The movie has nothing to do with drumming. It is about confidence. These legendary drummer didn't become legendary because they could drum amazing. If you gave up all your time and just practiced you would be an amazing drummer but you would still have the hurdle of confidence. For how skilled all these musicians are not one had the confidence in their skill the confidence to stand up and say I'm not rushing or I am in tune.

They all wait for the teacher to give them the opportunity, no one just takes it. I wonder if the directive mind knew how prominent of a narrative this is or if it was all created and brought together innately.

Did anyone notice how many drum hits your hear in the movie that you don't see. You will hear a snare hit but the clip is him playing and not hitting the snare. I remember that being distracting when I watched the movie. Overall, still liked the movie but mostly for JK Simmons intensity and storyline.

the fact that the protagonist holds the drumsticks so unnaturally makes this film unwatchable... in my opinion :)

Never heard of this movie and while I enjoyed the information I still have no desire to see it.
