I'll throw this out there. For deer/esp. eastern US, really, any .30 will do. The 7mm/08 is ballistically better, but let's stay on topic...
It (.308) literally can be found in every rifle platform, Lever, pump, AR, semi-auto (Browning/FN), Bolt, Single shot & double.

The old -06 does everything better than a 308, except be available in an AR-10 platform.

The first and only elk ive taken was with a 308 and 180gr Federal power shok. Bang, ran 30yds leaving a blood trail that Ray Charles could follow and slid to a stop. Complete pass thru.

Versatility doesn't mean anything until you start handloading. Hands down,if you handload youll have a hard time beating the 30.06 family for a good balance of accuracy and stopping power at realistic ranges.

The 308 is good enough for 90 percent of my hunting means, and the 300 winchester magnum handles 5 percent, and my 870 wingmaster with the interchanged shorter barrel on it, handles the last 5 percent.

This is just click bait. These guys know that the 30-06 is the most versatile in all categories that the 308 is mentioned. Better at all bullet weights. More versatile in all powders available. Found at all the same stores that you can find 308. I also think that it's easier to hand load. The only comparison that's close is 130-150 grain pills. After that, it's getting out of hand really quickly. For the warfighter, yes, the 308 is better, but those systems are to heavy in my opinion. For the woods I'll always have either the 06 or 6 arc. They do everything that I need in the 48.

I just had a 358 Norma built. No, not hunting bears any time soon or moose. I live in Pennsylvania. Our deer are like really big squirrels. A big mountain deer might go 140 live weight for a big buck. I happily fill my doe tags on 80-100 pound doe and find them very tasty. So why the Norma? Easy. Versatility. Easy to load for and I can turn it into anything from a 38 special rifle with Unique or Trailboss to loads knocking on the doors of a 375 to loads with my home-cast RCBS 200 grain lead bullets at 35 Remington velocities. Yes, I have a 308 in a Rem model 7. Just about the best woods gun ever.

I don’t own a .308 but I believe it is a great all around cartridge. A deer cartridge that’s more than a deer cartridge. As far as for dangerous game protection; I’d rather have a .308 than a .44 magnum, with the right bullet.

I don’t understand how you could possibly make the argument that the .308 is the most versatile when the .30-06 exists. Anything the .308 can do, the .30-06 can do, and some things better. Literally the only thing it can’t do that the .308 does, is run in an AR10, other than that, it’s better in every way. With hand loading, you can ho as light with bullets in a .30-06 that you can go in a .308. What the .308 cannot do, is go as heavy as the .30-06 can. You can get cheap milsurp ammo for both, and on a store shelf, they’re both just as common. Everyone who makes a rifle, makes them in both cartridges. It’s literally audacious to make the argument for the .308. When you’re making the argument for the .308 you’re literally making the argument for the .30-06 and then giving the crown to its lesser little brother.

He is sitting ther balking at a .350 BC out of a .30 cal bullet lmao. A 45/70 FTX has a .230 BC. This whole hogh BC craze is BS.

308 has enough for Black Bear and Elk dozens of times for me with 165 grain superperformance Hornady. That case pairs well with a light 243 Win for reloading and smaller game. If you need more than 308 then you are probably in Africa or going after a big bear.

Well he talks about having a couple of screws loose. I suspect because they are talking about the 308. When I think of 308 that is a military round. It's as good as it can be for a price point. Which means it pretty much sucks.

I was joking today with a fellow employee that I bought a new rifle in Gods caliber. He asked what caliber that was, and I told him "308". He smiled because he too shoots a 308.

6.5 Creed and 30/06 owner. Love them both dearly. The 6.5 deserves the "meh not the best catrdige" for deer. I certainly wouldn't consider an elk with. I harvested my first 2 deer with the 6.5 this year. One was 120 yards, the other ablut 90, not much blood and trauma. Lungs and internals turned to butter, but blood trails were not impresive. Hornady American Whitetail 129gr Interlocks.

The 3006 and the 250 savage were here 100 yrs before the 6.5 creedmore and almost 50 years before the 308 .the 308 is so good it will never go away.i have 3 3006s 1 7mm mag 2 708s what do i hunt with ? A model 99 in 300 savage just a little less tĥen the great 308.the 99 savage in 300 savage points so well you dont need anything more

Notice how almost all folks who have several rifles have at least one 308WIN.
I have never fallen in love with 308WIN and i prefer 7mm-08… and still the only cartridge that I have more than one rifle chambered in is 308WIN.

I also love the 130 TTSX 😊 I shot a moose with them at 166yds in a clearcut. It was going 3150 in 30-06 a grain under book max with big game. I hit it in the shoulder and found the bullet against the opposite side hide. It was beyond fully expanded, the base was distorted. Now I'm running them with imr 4064 1 grain under book max and getting 3300!

I have some 55grain Remington sabots that are crazy fast for coyotes. My first gun was a 760 game master bdl in 308. I have 5 308’s now. I love my model 88 Winchester
