This video is absolute garbage. Halo the TV series was entirely faithful to canon and I loved the time when we finally met Master Cheeks!

in capitalism the thing that disrupts just becomes the thing it disrupted. The moment any company can monopolize and just become a de facto tax, it will.

Could you use a NAS in the living room near the tv, or would it be too noisy?

This video sent me down a rabbit hole of learning about linux servers, setting up the *arr stack, homeassistant, high speed networking, pivpns and piholes, iptv and remote gamestreaming. Thanks for being the start to a new hobby and giving my friends and family access to quality entertainment in the days of enshittification of streaming.

Im not sure about the price comparison…😅 calculating kept simple…

700$ NAS (I know u don’t need this exact one) and
100$ a year for so many stream services (but you also don’t need so many services at the same time)y

NAS with all the drives needs to survive 7 years. Storage needs shouldn’t get to big otherwise you need new drives. Running a NAS 24/7 can increase the electricity bill.

And you have to maintain everything…

The transcoding example for me went a bit like. I don’t live transcode because you need a powerful computer. So I transcode beforehand, I use a powerful computer so it doesn’t take as long. But the important point here is: it safes storage space🎉

I know what I would do. That’s was Jegf is going because I like owning stuff I spent my money on not just „rent“ it. Same with cloud storage. NAS can replace this as well and since I have a NAS already it’s pretty cheap to start a media server…

is there a way. to access infuse away from home over data? or is it local access only? always wanted this for the kids because we don't have broadband in rural canada but can get mobile data on cellphones.

not sure if it has been mentioned yet, but you can also get alot of the more popular tv shows and movies for free by using your local library. Rent them, rip them, and return them. Repeat endless and you will amass a giant collection of media for nothing more then the cost of gas

I found Plex better and Synology handles it well. Trouble with these movie library you have to rip movies. Takes a while. And how many movies can you rip?
There are great shows on TVs that you won’t be able to rip anytime soon.

Genuine question, what is the advantage of creating a media server via blurays, versus just using the blurays like normal in a player? The only purpose i can see is to save space in your home, but even then, if you were to invest in a NAS, i think the price is so high for most people that it wouldnt be worth it. And imo, the appeal of using bluray isn't just owning a copy, its that playing on disc offers better quality than streaming services, and the extra features. If youre going to compress the video file and lose the extras for the sake of data storage, i dont think youre really getting the full value of the bluray purchase. Dont get me wrong, making your own bespoke Netflix seems like a fun project, but using a physical media library to do it makes it seem like a very expensive way to avoid putting a disc in a player.

So Jeff, I am new to this and wanting to set this up at home. Do I need to put a video card in my server to transcode the video or is it just streaming the video file to the new device without using the card? I am not understanding if I need a video card or not and why?

I have been running Jellyfin since august 2021, because I needed a solution to give family members and close friends access to my media library.
Personally i use Kodi for all my local media viewing, and watching the norwegian NRK using a legal plugin. My kodi machine is connected to the TV, and is exclusively used for running Kodi.

I started looking at Jellyfin because one of my best friends have been running Plex on a dedicated Supermicro rack server in his shed since 2018, and I help him administer the server, and for that I have access using a Kodi plugin.

The reason I chose Jellyfin over Plex is that Jellyfin is Free Software whereas Plex is proprietary. Jellyfin is also not dependent on a third party internet server for login access, which Plex is if you want anyone outside your network to have access.
This also means that if the internet or the official Plex login server is down for whatever reason and you have optet for the online Plex login system, you lose local Plex access.

My friend found this out when a digger cut the fiber to his local area a friday evening, severing the internet for about 200 people. The ISP couldn't fix it until the following monday, and my friend didn't want to wait that long to watch his local content. Since his education is in telecom and specifically fiber assembler, he called someone he had telecom classes with who lived in the area and had a telecom work car at home. And together they fixed the fiber cable themselves on saturday morgning. 🙂

Btw, I'm here due to the recent YT-Strike, but I am a long time viewer of the channel.

I also don't pay for Netflix or Disney+ anymore. I just buy what I want to watch and rip it. But I mostly just watch Harry potter

The thing that annoys me most about streaming services is they're now locking them to your IP that you sign up on. So even if you got to travel somewhere, you can't even use your Netflix account coz you're not at home, that IP is not associated with this account... Remember torrenting? Maybe people should do that again, I mean they made streaming services to combat torrenting and piracy but it seems like Netflix has forgotten this. We need to remind them what happens when you restrict the ability to watch what you want, where you want, when you want?

An important information missing here is that it is impossible to find Jellyfin clients for Samsung Smart TVs (also not Infuse). There is an open source version for Samsung Tizen but the installation process is horrible and all the tutorials are for Windows only.
So basically I have Jellyfin on my NAS now and can play movies on all my mobile devices but not my TV which is kind of the whole point. Samsung offers Plex in their App Store but why would I pay monthly to build my own streaming service?! That looked so promising.
