Simplicity and Precision | Architect Phillip Mathieson’s Inner-Sydney Apartment

Envisioned as a personal retreat from the bustle of Sydney’s inner city, this apartment by architect Phillip Mathieson embodies the Mathieson Architects philosophy in its purest form: simplicity, material integrity, and spatial generosity. Located within the iconic Altair Apartments in Potts Point, originally designed by Engelen Moore, the home was meticulously reimagined to create a serene, light-filled space for Phillip and his partner Thierry Dagnicourt. The apartment was stripped back to its shell and rebuilt with elemental materials – sandblasted limestone, flamed granite, and dark-stained oak – bringing texture, restraint, and warmth to every surface.

With integrated joinery and concealed functionality, the home is a study in architectural discipline. Blum's innovative systems underpin the apartment’s seamless kitchen and storage solutions, ensuring every detail is both beautiful and practical. From the reconfigured layout to the sculptural kitchen island, every design choice reinforces the apartment’s role as a restorative sanctuary. “It’s really just about appreciating natural light, the outlook to the garden, and being able to sit down in the evening and feel removed from life,” Phillip reflects.
