Inks do go bad... In that a bunch of mine dried up and became completely unable to open after around 4 years of not using them. In my defense... I was living in a different continent to them 😅

Just an FYI for anyone coming across this: watercolor paper is not good indefinitely since the sizing decays over time (exacerbated by heat and humidity). That paper can still be used for pretty much any other art medium (I'd avoid alcohol markers since the paper's so absorbent and you'll probably end up wasting a lot of ink), but you'll get splotchy results with watercolor.

Your videos are so calming. Whenever i start to beat myself up for having too many unfinished sketchbooks, or not using every single one of my art supplies all the time- i just go to your channel and watch your videos. The vibes are wonderful, the art is amazing, and you taught me that it's okay. That it's just fine to have things. Thank you so much.

I’m only 24 and have amassed hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars in art supplies, thanks to friends, family, and even old art teachers gifting them to me/passing them down to me and my own personal funds. You can imagine the level of panic and chaos that ensued when my father started throwing them all away when he was helping me move. Thank goodness I saved them in time! I’m looking forward to having just as well-stocked artistic materials as you some day!

That's a well-stocked studio, indeed! "Do inks go bad?" We asked the Utrecht Art Supplies team about shelf life of various materials, and they said that traditional inks (India Ink, dye-based colors) should be fine to use if they appear to have a normal consistency, or if settling has occurred, can be recombined by stirring. India-type ink with a shellac component can't be reconstituted if it has dried out. Acrylic dispersion paints, inks and mediums may not last as long in storage, if antimicrobial preservatives have lost potency, or if the product has been subject to freezing temperatures. Acrylics that have clotted are not suitable for use. If some mold colonies have formed, but the remaining product appears normal, the affected portion can usually be removed and the remainder used up immediately. Oil paints that have been tightly capped and have retained a normal, soft consistency with some unbound oil present are likely OK to use at any age.
