Such a fascinating story 👏
Although, as an Ethiopian, i grew up hearing and learning about the history of Ethiopian Christianity, I'm still astonished by the bravery and wisdom of our forefathers in preserving the old tradition 🙏🏽

I know that this is an incredibly surface level comment after such a lush overview of a fascinating religious practice, but i gotta say: I love everyone’s lil ‘fros in the icons and saint paintings. Oh my gosh they’re so cute 🩷 We don’t see much sacred depiction Black people in Christian art (save a Magus or occasional saint or oxidized Madonna), so seeing this much all at once is real treat.

I know a lot of Ethiopians and Eritreans, but most of them are protestants who fled religious persecution. I never realized the Ethiopian church was so unique

Stating matter of factly that Muslims are around 30%of the population (you said some estimates, but that language doesn't suggest that other estimates are wildly different) seems misleading to me. There are a lot of very conflicting estimates of how much of ethiopia is christian and how much is muslim, but generally when looking at the entire body of surveys it is somewhere roughly around half and half. Saying that either religion has only 30% of the population sounds like you are taking from one of the surveys that show the largest differences in their popularity, or just found the first result available without checking it against any other credible sources, not taking a genuine look at a variety of surveys

Correction: Neither the modern state of Ethiopia or its predecessor kingdoms where ever known as Kush, rather prior to the modern day Ethiopia, the area was ruled by the kingdoms of Abyssinia, and prior to that Aksum.

Kush, was a civilization that produced a series of kingdoms in the area of modern day Sudan, not Ethiopia. Your confusion likely results from the fact that ancient greek sources often referred to Kush as Aethiopia, a term that was also used generically to describe dark skinned Africans, ie 'Aethopians.'

More than a 1000 years later this term was appropriated by the rulers of the Ethiopian empire, but the history of Kush and Ethiopia should not be conflated. They are culturally, linguistically, and geographically distinct.

Doesn't the number 3 in world mythology always represent the same thing?

Triumph over the season of death?

Based on the sacred promise Mother Nature demonstrates to all who incarnate in her world. Winter is her season of death which lasts 3 months. And is always... always... always... followed by the season of life. Known as Spring. Which is also 3 months long. And is the season of rebirth and reconstitution and resurrection.

Didn't dying and rising Deities all arise out of the Agricultural period which emerged out of the Hunter Gatherer period which preceded it. And don't dying and rising Gods symbolize the annual death and resurrection cycle of Mother Nature. Which consists of 12 sacred lunar cycles. And in which the season of death is always, always, always, followed by the season of life.

Also every month the moon dies for 3 days... and then is reborn anew as a sacred new moon. This is why dying and rising gods are entombed for 3 days... before they resurrect. This is why Hermes Trismegistus was known as... "The Thrice Great." As he was famous for triumphing over the season of death. Just like Jesus The Christ... sometime later.

This is what the 3 Mithraic wise men represent. And this is all the Christian Trinity actually symbolizes. It isn't about the individual literary personas but rather the sacred underlying mythological promise of the number 3. Which is what most parental deity religions are selling. Entrance into Studio 54... for only the best people. Certainly the 3 Abrahamic religions do just this.

They are selling a solution to the season of death. Which is what the sacred promise of the number 3 symbolizes. And it is exactly what many human beings so desire. Entrance into Studio 54 for only the best people.💙

Selam(peace) be upon you, from Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Christian brother 🙏
One minor correction beloved brother 🙏
Timket(ጥምቀት) means baptism, yes the epiphany took place at our Lord's baptism in the Jordan river but the word literally translates to baptism 🙏
And can you please do a video on the Ethiopian Orthodox view of the intercession of Jesus Christ that's found in (Romans 8:34) and (Hebrews 7:25) we have a different view and interpretation of these verses than all other Christendom and it's dividing people in the church please beloved brother can you do a well researched beautiful video just like this one and find it's origin and significance because i can't find anything out there that explains this topic and believe me it's a big one right now 🙏
By His holy grace may our Lord and God Jesus Christ of Nazareth bless you ✝️🙏❤️🛐

Ethiopia had practised Judiasm before Christianity. That is why we call it Tewahedo (means unity of The original Testament Torah and the New Testament). The early Kings used to send representative to Jerusalem. Acts 8:26-40 explains how Philip and the Ethiopian Eunuch.

Fantastic! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge & insights on this topic!

I just wish that Westerners who speak about Ethiopia would invest a bit time to learn to pronounce the words & names accurately| Especially the vowels, none of which are unfamiliar or difficult. The main problem is that the Semitic languages of Ethiopia {as well as most other languages of the region} have a system of 7 distinct vowels, while the Latin alphabet has but 5 vowels to transliterate 7. There is an undeniable dismissiveness and disrespect when someone relates the history of another individual or group, assuming a certain level of authority, but has neglected {for whatever reasons} to learn how to pronounce the names of people & places and other terms that resist translation. Even if completely unintended this gives the impression that the individual perceives himself as superior.
The Ethiopic script is actually quite easy to learn and it is based on/derived from the Sabaean script of the South Semitic language branch.

Interesting video, both for facts and visual content, thanks. Some of the Church robes are splendid. Didn't know Ethiopian Christians didn't eat pork, or that they observe both Jewish Sabbath and Christian Sunday day of worship. I assume the very early Christians in Judaea did the same.

I would have been interested to see something of an Ethiopian Church service, including a sample of what their music sounds like, the sound of the language they use and to see what posture they adopt to pray, whether they kneel like Western Christians, or more fully abase themselves, more like Muslims.

Perhaps it should be briefly mentioned that until the 20th Century, the Ethiopian Orthodox Church approved of slavery. This suggests that Christianity is not intrinsically anti-slavery, but the inspiration of Western Christian campaigners against slavery like Wilberforce is a strand specific to Western Christianity, it is not necessarily implicit in the religion and its scriptures.

this video is great!!! the jewish ties to tewahedo orthodox practices run a lot deeper too, from the way we count our time through the day, to the clothes we wear at church, and many other rulings of our church! also with our fasting, on fasting days, tewahedo orthodox have to refrain from all food from 9pm the day before to 3pm (some more holy and dedicated people fast till 6pm) the next day, and then we are vegan for the rest of the day (these timings also come from judaism).

Catholicism has nothing to do with Christianity. It’s not Christian never has been ever will be. It’s paganism. None of their dogma is found in the Bible and I mean the Bible I mean the king James version the authorized version ABC 1611 that’s the inspired word to God for the English-speaking people all the other versions are corrupt you can throw in the garbage But yeah I’m in the Trinity that’s not in the Bible. There’s no three persons God is a spirit in the book of John John 424 Bible says God was manifest in the flash Emmanuel God with us Jesus said if you seen me you seen the father Jesus was the word made flash the words that come from your mouth are you God spoke the world into existence and through Jesus Christ or through the word The world was made Jesus is Jehovah Jesus is the father. Jesus is the son and he’s the Holy Ghost what is a ghost that’s the spirit of the departed K she said I’ll send the comforter, but I must need to go away first so Catholicism isn’t Christian and all these other little offshoots are just nonsense. You have to go by the Bible Reason why there’s so many different so-called Christian churches organizations because they have their own little traditions they’re nonsense. They don’t go by the Bible OK that’s the problem. People don’t go and do it. The scripture say it’s very the Bible so easy to understand. The scripture is no private interpretation so anyway they’re not there. Aren’t that many Christians out there? I sure ain’t no 1.8 billion or whatever 2 billion whatever that’s for sure unfortunately that’s the case. I wish there were but most people claim to be Christian no more Christian than you know Harikrishna Anyway you have a pretty good channel. I appreciate your work out here. Why must also say any organization or religion, etc. that are deemed it necessary to wear some kind of a outfit or uniform or no it is of hell OK the orthodox they baptize babies they do they do everything most everything this scripture just like the Catholics I think they can get married though which is a good thing for them a lot a lot or less homosexuality and pedophilia so yeah they’re not Christian either really I like their icons so they’re really pretty their art that’s about it. Oh but yeah, then you got the Judaism you know the men men in black they’re out of their minds. All they do is bang up and do their dubbing having sex with some demon goddess, and they want to rule the world. The Catholics want to rule the world. The Muslims are are out of their minds. God is doesn’t even have a spirit. He’s got two right arms and ridiculous and Mohammed was the worst of mankind. He was a sicko. He was a child molester murder Everything evil but yet they say he’s the best mankind so yeah go figure anyway that’s all.

@Flip please read(Acts 8:26-39) According to the Bible Ethiopia was introduced to Christianity in the 1st century by an Ethiopian man who pilgrimaged to Jerusalem. According to this tradition, the apostle Philip converted an Ethiopian eunuch, who was a high official in the court of the Queen of Ethiopia (referred to as Candace) after a meeting on the road to Gaza, as recorded in the New Testament (Acts 8:26-39). This eunuch is believed to have taken Christianity back to Ethiopia, which could have marked the initial introduction of the faith.

However, it was not until the 4th century, with the influence of Frumentius and the conversion of King Ezana, that Christianity became formally established and widespread in Ethiopia.

Corrections:
- At one point in the video, I say that the blood and flesh of Christ is "symbolically" consumed. This was a poor choice of words in the moment, as it seems to imply the theological understanding that the bread and wine only symbolizes the blood and flesh, which is not the doctrine of the EOC.

Question:
Lately, I've been recording some of my videos without my classic Shure SM7, instead using a portable microphone. This inevitably results in somewhat lower sound quality in general, but it also makes the recording of the videos much easier and less time consuming. Let me know if you notice a major difference and if the sound quality is getting in the way, so I can decide what the best option is going forward.
