Hi Gabriel, the damage that is often overlooked is sea salt oxidation; those churches are so close to the ocean. It causes a lot of erosion to metals, stone, and other materials. Those berries look like boysenberries; they do look like blackberries; it's just a slightly distinct color. It's funny, you usually see berries in cooler climates. A relaxing vibe along the shore makes you think about your own retirement. I would think that there aren't many artists who still do Fresco paintings to repair this type of work. It has to be an art form that just isn't taught much anymore.

Gabriel hi. Like I mentioned in another video of yours (and despite the written attack of some haters towards me) you need to correct the sounds of some vowels .
2.51 Ayioi Theodoroi for example.
Οι , ει, υι, are thiphthongs prounced eee just like η, ι, υ, usually with the second vowel being ι.
So it would be Ayiee Theodoree pronounced . Perhaps if you are interested, you can get the Peter Mackridge book "The MODERN GREEK LANGUAGE". There has been extensive work on how the greek language is pronounced and written like in no other book on this planet.
Other than that, your videos are excellent. I live only a few kilometers away from Kalamata(North Peloponnese).

A little disappointed by what you said about Kalamata after only one night there and only seeing the coast area. There is so much more to see, and please don't forget that much of Kalamata's beautiful architecture was destroyed in the 1986 earthquake which claimed the lives of 30 people, injured around 330 and rendered maby homeless. If you are here again please give Kalamata another look and especially the historic quarter. It's a fabulous town.

Old people could not appreciate the historical value, so when paintings and frescoes were damaged they were painting the walls white to look clean and fresh. All whit churches have murals under the paint.

38.55 Agioi Anargyroi were 2 brothers ,Kosmas and Damianos .They were doctors who healed people without charging, hence their name Anargyroi(without accepting money). They died in 303AD.

Gabriel, I must say I thoroughly enjoyed your visits and descriptions of the Byzantine churches. I am grateful to you for showing such a beautiful part of my country, which I had no idea of although I did travel to Areopolis 37 years ago with my English husband and inlaws.
Two things I worry about when I see you stepping in wild dry grass in those sandals. Standing near snakes which could come out of any stone wall tumnled fown rocks . You are aware of vipera ammodytes being poisonus, aren't you? Another thing that worries me is seeing you wondering on those remote areas with no hat on and the sun is strong even at 8 am now.

Hi Gabe, some good beaches around Gytheio : Selinitsa, Mavrovouni (the most popular), Valtaki (or Glyfada) with the …shipwreck, also Vathi / Ageranos. If you feel like walking/trekking, you can checkout Trinisa (some small, secluded beaches /bays), don’t confuse it with the (large) Ttrinisa beach (a few kms away) which is also very nice…
On a more ‘’future plan’’, but still on that area there is the island of Kythira (off the beaten path, probably empty this time) that really worth’s a visit (even more an exploration…).

Dear Gabriel don't skip Diros Caves.
It's a highly recommended attraction. There aren't any other caves like these in Greece. Nothing alike the others you have seen so fat. You will be stunned by the beauty of nature. The caves go as far as one km deep under the mountain and the visit is by boat.

Ruined two-story tower between the villages of Kampos and Stavropegi that belonged to the Koumoundourai family.
The family's dominance in the area dates back to the 1760s when Athanasios Koumoundourakis or Koumoundouros or Koumoundoureas participated in the major conflicts between the Koumoundourakis, Troupakis and Koutifarai families, eventually plundering Kalamata in 1764 together with Georgakis Mavromichalis and eventually managing to be appointed captain of Stavropegi. He was succeeded in the captaincy by Panagiotis Koumoundourakis, who in 1798 was appointed Bey of Mani, a position in which he remained until 1803, when he was imprisoned by the Ottomans.
The most distinguished member of the family was Alexandros Koumoundouros (1815-1883), who served ten times as Prime Minister of Greece for a total period of 7.5 years. His bust is located at the entrance to the tower.
The tower is considered to have been built after 1830. It is not known whether an older tower existed on its site. This is possible, but it is likely that the Koumoundouroi, as prominent figures in the area, were initially (and pre-revolutionarily) settled in the Castle of Zarnata, which is located very close by.
Near the Koumoundouros Tower is the Mycenaean vaulted tomb of the Homeric Machaonus, a famous physician of antiquity, who was the son of Asclepius and participated in the Trojan War, where he was eventually killed. According to legend, it was Nestor, the king of Pylos, who brought Machaonus to his homeland and buried him.

You missed the fortified complex of the Mourtzinas - Troupakis, which occupies the northeastern part of the hill in Pano Kardamyli in Messinian Mani. The complex consists of the tower, the three-story fortified residence (onta), which today houses the museum, the blacksmith shop, the church of Saint Spyridon, the vegetable garden, the olive mill and three fortified enclosures.

The Peloponnese is in a way the equivalent of Sicily for Italy - very similar size, same latitude and an abundance of ancient history and traditions distinct from their respective mainlands. Obviously Sicily is much more populated and touristic (for good reason).

The kalamata region was hit by a big earthquake in 1987 which demolished many buildings. So it makes sense that these churches show signs of cracking which had been repaired.
