the most disgusting thing I ever witness in my time of gaming in 30 years of playing games was a game physical case with no physical game in it, but a paper with a code writtenon it, and no guide manual. Since when are companies so out of money they wanna save money not giving you a simple manual? We all loved those back in the days. Its just disgusting to see a game code and no physcial form of the game to hold in your hand, and it makes no sense why even sell the empty case like that.

I agree with your prediction of where gaming is going but I disagree with the conclusion that nothing can be done. Personally most of my purchases will be games from previous generations and I'm going to stick to older games that have a good reputation that I never tried when they first came out.

Can someone explain to me how software that’s downloaded (on a switch) can actually become obsolete? If I can play it now without an internet connection, I hate difference would it make?

Here's the thing about corporations.....money talks. People say they want complete physical editions. Yet they are fine giving money for digital. Pick a side a support it. 8 know it's not always convenient, but my money goes where I want. Does it mean missing out on a game? Yup.
It doesn't help the cause to say you don't want digital, yet but digital anyway.

I hate that they can change or delete the stuff you own. I hate that they can shut down eshops, and just say f you.
Also its way less fun buying a digital copy...

I went ahead and swapped over this gen. I don't have any regrets, it actually became depressing for me to buy and open a physical game for all the reasons you mentioned. It's just brittle plastic with nothing inside but a disc with incomplete data that mostly acts as a key. That's so far from opening my fresh Genesis cartridge in the mall food court as a kid and pouring over the manual. Sad.

They aren’t in control the customers are. The customers forced Microsoft to change their model for Xbox one which is why I can buy a pre owned game for my Xbox one x for £5. If people refused to buy games that were digital only developers would revert back to making physical media again since digital only would become counterproductive since they would be losing money. It takes some sacrifices but if enough people were willing to do it problem solved. I refused to get Alan wake 2 on principle. But I’m just one person. If others did the same we wouldn’t have the problem you are talking about. It was the same with the Covid vaccine. In the UK they couldn’t make it mandatory because I put my foot down and so did other like minded individuals. My body my choice. Now what was once a threat became a bluff. I was able to stay in my industry despite not being vaccinated and I never got sick. Never got Covid, not even once.

To be completely honest, this whole situation is dependent on how you adapt and what interests you. I will say I'm quite fortunate not to really care or have a need to play Current Gen titles so I don't feel pigeon holed to conforming into today's standard of games.

I recently bought an evercade which is all physical carts of a bunch of titles I've never played before, and I still have a huge retro and current Gen library of games I still haven't played. So in the end for some including myself I've just decided to take a back seat and not buy games if they're not physical.

I hope it all works out in the end, and no one gets screwed over, but I'm also a realist, we've all been getting screwed for a long time and we just take it unfortunately.

Great vid man!

I like buying brand new games physically in case I want to sell it after beating or posing interest. I also like having a physical collection that contains the games that truly matter for me. But outside of that, I've gone completely digital for the following reasons:

1. Convenience. Don't have to go anywhere to buy a game. Don't have to wait or pay for shipping. Don't have to change out discs/cartridges (which I especially love for remote play and handheld gaming).

2. Takes up less space. The less I own, the less space I need to pay for and as such, I spend less of my life working to pay for it.

3. I am often away from home, sometimes for weeks at a time. Digital gaming makes it so I have access to all of my games no matter where I go.

4. I am in a long distance relationship, and having a digital library of games makes it so my girlfriend can play any of my games on her own systems whenever she wants.

Apparently, for a lot of games, sales numbers for physical are still higher than for digital downloads. Vote with your wallet. And if you do choose to buy a digital download, at least put it off for as long as you can. Buying day 1 in this day and age is a gamble anyway; give it some time and see if it appears to be any good.

Digital Steam games you do own. At least you can back them up on a hard drive and play them on any pc. Also you can run a fix on them so they start up and run without internet in case that ever became necessary. Also can burn them on a blue ray disk and make them physical. When consoles go digial only the physical game values with go way up.

I went digital when I couldn't find Batman Arkham Knight on disc in 2015, and honestly, should've done it years earlier. "You don't own the game, it can be taken away", you can scratch up a disc too, harddrives can fail. In life nothing is guaranteed, lmfao. Why build a bunker of things you do not actually use, that your kids or grandkids won't use? Fear I think. That's ultimately it. Fear of change.

This how I feel going into the 10th generation

I feel Nintendo is probably gonna keep physical alive the longest but sony I have doubts on the ps6 not being sony's leap into the all digital future like Microsoft

And that's probably why I'll stick to PC (and Nintendo for exclusives) next generation cause at least with PC there's more competition between storefronts to allow better prices to be found while sony and microsoft only offer one storefront for digital games

You're operating on a misconception. Yes, there are some, and I stress the word "some," games that require day one patches to play and operate correctly,; however, that is not the case with the majority of physical games released even today. Just because there's a day one patch doesn't mean that game is broken, it just means that companies have the ability to patch out any type of glitch, whether they be minor or serious glitches, after a game launches. Most of the time the glitches that are present in launch day physical copies today are no worse than glitches that were found in games that were released on consoles pre-internet. Only back then, patches could only be implemented in future re-releases of a game, which was actually very common. Day one patches give the illusion that modern games are released unfinished and broken in comparison to what we perceived we got on pre-internet consoles, but an illusion is all that it really is. If companies would have had the ability to launch patches over the Internet on the original PlayStation or N64, they would have been doing it just as much done as I do now. Outside of a few notable modern releases that did launch broken, most games are not broken at lunch, and a day one patch may be there, but most of the time it's not a necessary download. And I'm a good judge of this because I played all my games from the disc offline without patches. And here are just a few that I've played and completed this past year without patches and had no issues with them:

- Persona 3 Reload
- Persona 5 Tactica
- Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
- Final Fantasy XVI
- Stranger of Paradise
- Granblue Fantasy Relink
- The Last of Us Part I
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Ys IX
- Stellar Blade
- Soul Hackers 2
- Eternights
- Scarlett Nexus
- Spider-Man Remastered
- Spider-Man: Miles Morales
- Spider-Man 2

And that's just on the PS5 this year. If i include the PS4 games I've also played and completed this year without updates or patches, then you can add:

- Resident Evil 2 Remake
- Our World is Ended
- Shining Resonance Refrain

And again, that's just THIS year. If I list every game I've completed on the PS4 without an update or patches, this post is gonna go on for a long time. And I have yet to run into a single major glitch that broke any game beyond play. And outside of its extra DLC content, every game was complete on the disc.

Before you drop physical media, i implore you to try playing some of your games from start to finish without updating them. I bet you're going to be surprised how many of them actually play perfectly fine in their vanilla forms.

The day 1 patch is a valid point even for physical games. Another thing is how much memory does a 4k bluray has? Because with how big games are getting i can see why eventually Bluray might just phase out. There's just not enough space on the disc to fit all of the game. Sure it's going to install faster than downloading on your system but you'll be missing the rest of it like updates and patches that make the game playable if it's not quite playable without them. But i still prefer buying physical when possible. I still own my N64, Psp, Ps3 slim, Launch day Ps4, Slim Ps5, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Wii Black edition and Ps Vita. And then i have my monster pc lol.
