The caste system was completely overlooked. The bottom of the food chain, the trader, was thrown to importance with the arrival of the foreigners. This completely overruled the Samurai to obscurity as the businessman had the means to procure guns and cannons...

As a Japanese, I have to say whatever happened to Japan, the loss of samurai and modernization only happened on the vast land of Japan and did not happen on other small Japanese islands, for example we who live on the island of Yonaguni, in the history of that island there were no warriors or samurai, even during WW2 Pacific when the Japanese core felt defeated but the people on the island of Yonaguni didn't know what was happening and didn't even know there was a war. Until now, there are no soldiers or police on this island, the security forces are only managed by the community, whose aim is to ensure that tourists are safe when visiting 😆🇯🇵

Ah, the IJA's and IJN's humble beginnings, only to be ended by the same country that forced them to open to the rest of the world.

But recent developments had made the JSDF take an 'active defense' stance...

I am intrigued at how brave and fearless the Samurai were especially in the final battle of the Satsuma Rebellion the Battle of Shiroyama and how they bravely fought to the end against the Imperial Japanese Army equipped with modern weapons. The Samurai were some of the most insanely badass and fearless warriors ever to exist in military history

For my fallow lovers of samurai history one thing I always point out is the Boshen war and later the satsuma rebellion were not like usually depicted with samurai in armour fighting with katana bow and spear and imperial forces using firearms. Many people forget to mention that Saigo had fought for the imperialists and had a stockpile of firearms canon and also Gatling guns and used them at the battle Shiroyama. As did samurai for hundreds of years at this point Saigo however was outnumbered and was basically loosing from the outset of the battle so desperately made the decision to charge with him remaining forces into the imperialist reinforcements were he was inevitably shot in the thigh realising his fight was over he committed seppuku with help from his assistant who soon removed his head. The last samurai is a very good addition of the true events I only wish the battle at the end was depicted properly but understand why it was the way it was in the end.

Japanese fan boys conveniently ignore the fact most samurai were thugs with katana's. They cut down peasants to test their weapons.

If the technological advancement of japan was at a steady pace, i believe samurai would be a military officer rank today, as ancient samurai wouldve been integrated into modern military ranks as entry level officer ranks.

What caused the fall of the samurai? How about the fact that Ieyasu Tokugawa decided to close off Japan from the rest of the world for over 200 years which caused them to never advance technologically since they never got to share with the rest of the world and so when Admiral Matthew Perry showed up at their door step with an entire fleet that was much bigger and more powerful than ANYTHING Japan was EVER ready for demanding that they open their country up for trade or be exterminated they kind of had no choice but to open their country back up and rapidly advance which ended up displacing the samurai who didnt have any purpose anymore.
