Polishing wooden furniture by a professional is expensive, especially when you have a home full of vintage and antique furniture. And I prefer to polish my wooden furniture every year before Diwali to jazz it up. And I like to do it DIY, because its not only satisfying but also saves me a lot of money and headaches.
In this 3-part series, I will show you how I easily polish my furniture at home, without much effort, and get professional-like results.
The Chess table I got from Meenu Khanolkar who has a lovely furniture workshop in Bangalore. I mentioned to her that I was planning to paint a chess table for my husband and she said she had one and I could take it! And no one says No to a handcrafted table with rosewood and white cedar inlay in a teak wood frame. My luck!

I told her I would polish it on my own and I grabbed it the day she offered it to me.
I cleaned all the dust off with a wet rage and then sanded it lightly with a 220 sand paper. I just wanted to get the top coat ruffed up a little bit.
For the polish, I used a Sheenlac water-based PU in Satin finish. I applied it with a clean brush. The polish needs to be diluted 1:1 with potable water and that's it! Wait for it to dry for an hour or so and then apply another coat.
I want the top to be very durable so I did a total of 4 coats on top and 2 coats for the stem and the pedestal. After the last coat was done I let it cure completely overnight and did not use or touch the table for a whole day after so the polish really cures. And that is how simple it was to polish.
Sheenlac polish is available on Amazon, here is the link to it.
