As a former NYYC member I was routing for American Magic. First congrats to the Italian team. Beautiful boat and organization. To my eye the Italian boat had a slight speed advantage. Looking forward the LV final should be very close theses boats are evenly matched. This is going to be great sailing. The Kiwis still look like the best boat / team still. With all this time off I am sure the kiwi boat will have found more boat speed. The LV finals might be more competitive than the actual cup races. We’re about to find out. This is great stuff. Weeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!

Congrats to LR! Slingsby has to be kicking himself for that gross misjudgment near the top of leg 1 on the attempted port tack cover - a blunder AM was unable to recover from. For all his sailing skill and the tech on board it was a stupendous error for a Cup helmsman.

It's interesting to look at start and finishes for this now concluded semifinal. Slingsby admitted in an interview with PlanetSail that he thought if they could win the start and avoid any mistakes then a win was certain. But, that's not how it played out. Four of the races (3-4 for LR and 6-7 for AM) the start winner won the race. But the other four saw the start winner lose. This series was won on the first day of racing when AM handily won both starts, but made critical foiling and handling mistakes that lead to loses. The Goodison injury and subsequent replacement by Calabrese was nothing short of a calamity. Overall AM controlled five of the eight starts hitting the favored left side of the course but in two of those races LR lucked out by tacking into favorable right shifts. LR won this series and may have the best VMG boat in the regatta but their start tactics are lacking and eventually the odds on the weaker right side will take their toll and better teams like NZ and INEOS won't gift wins to their opponents like AM.
