Is it true that Bobick's confidence was so shattered by the loss to Stevenson in the quarter finals, he lost his next fight too, and thus a chance at the bronze medal? If this is true, who did he lose to next?

Does anyone have the full Bobick/Stevenson fight, such as it lasted?

Olympic Boxing is a single elimination tournament, so when Bobick lost to Stevenson, he was out. They fought in the 2nd round of matches. Had Bobick won the fight, he would have at least qualified for a bronze medal.

Bobick held a win over Stephenson, and even knocked him down (very briefly, for a 1 count) but Stephenson totally got his revenge, and completely demolished Bobick here. I think Teo won every other fight he had with Bobick too. Great champion. Too bad Stephenson never got to fight as a pro. Would have been interesting to see him against the likes of Ali, Norton, Formean, Holmes, etc.

Teofilo (like Ali) had tremendous hand speed, didn't he? And then back up by power too. So good.

@zenmachinefilms I agree with you. It would have been very interesting to see Stephenson fight the top professional boxers of that era. It's a shame that it never happened.

@ElFlacoVerde Stevenson seemed, to me anyways, a man amongst boys, and as I posted earlier in response to @zenmachinefilms, it was a shame that we never got to see how he would have fared against the best professional heavyweights of that era. My guess is that he would have done well. But as you posted, we'll never know.

@zenmachinefilms: Norton would have torn him a new one. Norton with that cross-armed defense would have parried those long jabs and blocked those long rights off of his left elbow and would have bombed him out with overhand rights. Stevenson had no defense for the overhand right.

@ElFlacoVerde ---if he trained hard and was managed right, he would have been top contender, if not a titleholder. After 75 fight against Frazier, Ali didnt have anything left. (Did not deserve decision over Norton in 3d fight) If he lost to leon spinks in spinks' what 7th pro fight?---what makes u think Stevenson couldnt have beaten him by then?

@combatesdeboxeo: Stevenson, Ingemar Johansson and Tyson have had the best one-punch-ability of them all. Not several heavy punches like Foreman or Marciano but clinical ones. Stevenson and the Klitschko-brothers box in the same manner and I think that if he would have turned pro he would have been in there with the best. When you become a pro you also adapts yourself to the new game, with more rounds and more resting during the rounds. It is like comparing 200 metres in athleitics with 800.

Duane Bobick excellent fighter, unlucky through out his career Has any body got the full fight, or his terrific battle with the 1976 olympian John Tate.

Bobick had defeated Stevenson one year before, in the Pan-American games. In this case, I think that Bobick completely underestimated Stevenson. After the Pan-American loss, Stevenson made adjustments, however Bobick went in with the same old strategy, expecting another victory.

if Stevenson turned pro and had a good trainer he would have done very well in the heavyweight division.6'5' with a knockout punch ,only ali's greatness would have a chance.

Stevenson was a professional fighting amateurs. Ali,Frazier,Foreman,Lyle,Quarry,Shavers,Norton; any of these would have crushed Stevenson!

If Stevenson had fought Nesterov first. I believe Bobick would have defeated the winner which would probably have been Nesterov as he had Stephenson number. He best Stevenson twice as an amateur. Duane fought Nesterov in the first round of the Olympics and put Nesterov down twice but unfortunately for Duane Bobick it was a really tough fight where they both got banged up. Duane Bobick was no Bum.

Bobick had the skills to be a great champion but froze up in big fights. Stevenson went on to a brilliant amateur career but sadly died of acute alcoholism. There was another Cuban heavyweight named Angel Milan that beat a great US amateur named Greg Page but he disappeared or dropped out sometime in the 80s. Later I asked a Cuban guy I met while working in a prison and he said Milan was stabbed to death.

Unfortunate that Cuban political tunnel-vision denied this great boxer a chance to fight the best in a classic era. A great boxer, but we'll never really know quite how great.

Bobick actually beat a young developing Larry Holmes to GET into the Olympics in 72. The terrorists actually killed the Israeli Soccer ⚽ team in Germany that year. Many Americans were in that bldg. Bobick could of been better but 🍸 drinking got in his way.

Just saw a documentary on Teofilo called "The People’s Fighters" by Five Rings Films. They called Bobick "The Great White Hope". He used to leave sympathy cards in the training room of his opponents before their bouts. What a dick. After Teofilo knocked him the fuck out, he handed the card back to him. Fucking awesome.
