They really need to make 3d wide lenses that are not vr180. It would be nice to be able to shoot simple 3d videos without the crazy super wide vr180 format. There is no way people want to shoot vr180 over just a normal wide 3d field of view for the majority of the content. VR180 really looks horrible until you get to around 3840x3840 per eye, which is really expensive. VR180 has to stretch the pixels across such a wide fov that it just looks bad. Its why all these vr180 specific cameras totally failed. The insta360 evo was one of the best ones, but its production even stopped. That was easily affordable and worked well WITH stabilization even, and nobody bought it. Its because vr180 is an odd format. It should not even be popular anyways. Its like trying to sell a 2d camera that shoots 180 field of view. How often do people want a 2d camera that shoots 180 degrees? Never. 3d isnt some radical difference, you want a wider fov, but not that wide. It just seems that canon does not really understand how popular vr180 can get. Sure, it should exist, but not before the wide 3d formats are available. It should be easier to optically made a wide 3d version. Its all a bit weird. Canon had that 3d camera demo, but that doesnt make it when this stuff does? This is the lens nobody really asked for. More people want normal 3d video than VR180, and if people think they want VR180, they probably will find out they dont after using it for a while.

Hi Hugh, since the Insta360 GO 3s was just announced, just wondering what your thoughts on it are or if you have a video coming up for it for a DIY VR 180 rig like the old dual GO 2. I know they changed the lens on the GO 3, so not sure how the fisheye field of view will be for VR.
Also any news on that small concept Canon VR camera shown last year that does either 360 or 180 3d?

i want to become a vr content creator,after watching your video,i think the r5c set is more suitable for me.the r7 set,a single eye 2k resolution is not enough. i guess the blackmagic would be verrry expensive.

I pay for "Slice of Life's" Patreon who, next to Hugh, is producing THE BEST 3D 180 content. Trust me when I say, when you get someone who can encode your 180 3D VR videos in 8k, there's just no going back. Even though I'm still using the Oculus 2, the difference is night and day.

I'm holding out for Canon's 180 3D/360 flip around lens camera that is rumored to be 8k...at least until the end of year holidays. If Canon doesn't release it by then, or at least announce a Q1 2025 date, picking up the the Insta360 X4.

But I REALLY rather have the Canon for the 180 3D option. Unless Hugh says it's garbage, that's my plan.

Isn't the Ursa Cine Immersive for the Immersive format? I thought the Canon was just for the Spatial Video.

From what I understand these are two separate formats, with separate workflows.

All of the content in Apple TV+ is in their Immersive format (8k per eye, 90 fps, 180 degree FOV) They mentioned that you would use the BlackMagic Camera, Resolve Studio and Apple Compressor to create Immersive content.

The iPhone, Vision Pro, and Canon all take Spatial video, which I understood to be a window through which you can see depth in standard types of videos. They said you would use Canon, Final Cut Pro and can export to Vimeo.

Does this lens work on Komodo?

So you don't use any quick mount for the insta360 pro 2?

Did you know that Canon R5C has a super35 5.9k HQ Raw mode ? It is much better than the r7 4K hevc.

Vision Pro everytime wouldn't be cool due to eye contact but you include it in a proper dose and I laughed so hard on your cowboy vision pro outfit :D. Also your older videos styles, spiked caps, crazy neon jackets and stuff. But also just basic clothing :). I hope you can enjoy this freedom as long as possible. 🍀🤍

I'm preparing arrival of Vision Pro in France 😀Si I'm checking for investment on VR180, This new lens is more affordable indeed but less quality compare with 5,2mm. I like the compact format Canon R7 + This Dual Lens, it would be easier to carry it especially when I am outdoor skiing activities for example 😅 If I invest, I need to buy the canon R7 as well, so budget is huge but comparable with one Vision Pro ! I will check with interest your further testing,

11 years ago we had better 3D cameras . . . no one is trying to do that again. Why? Would you like a zoom lens, auto parallax and stabilization? Only available in 1080p on eBay.

Thanks for the video. It's an interesting product but I don't think the APS-C sensor resolution is high enough yet to make the lens worth it. I'll just stick to shooting iPhone 15/16 Pro (with dual sensors) or save up and go for full frame 8K solution, or even a twin M43 camera setup. Maybe Canon has a new 8K crop sensor body in the works 🤔

The 2K per eye kills it for me. Just have to save enough for the Blackmagic

Hey Hugh, Is Premier the only way to inject metadata for vr180 with ambisonics?

i really wonder what Canon had in mind with this lens. With a price over USD 1000,- it's not really "comsumer entry level" and 4K60 is still too blurry. Although it could be possible to AI upscape it to an acceptable 6K resolution. But the 144 degree really kills this lens in my opinion. I saw the video done with this lens and it felt like looking through a narrow pipe. I don't know if there is any market for this, to be honest.

I'd prefer a dual 35mm lens, to make more cinematic 3D content. They could have two x 2:1 anamorphic lenses and use the whole 8K sensor on the R5. It would be a dream lens for me.

Hugh, or anyone, is there a way to insert 3D regular video into a vr180 video? Like inserting a graphic in the 3d space?

VR Developer here. I'm considering this over my much dated VuzeXR. I'm also interested in potentially grabbing some long exposure content of the night sky. Can this be done?

I do not have an R7 yet but my guess is it has a 4K crop at 60fps which is why the 3D only works with 30fps.
