About the timeline, in the beginning it defines 3 timelines and their respective longevity. They take place in one week: 'the mole'. In which we see 'the sea' , 1 day of the week and ' the air' which is one hour. First time watching it can be confusing but on the second one watch remember characters better and see the timelines converge. It's typical Nolan, some like it, some don't. imo it's a great way of showing just one of the chapters in the entire war. He captured the sheer terror, fear, heroic actions, and devastating story's of just 1 week of a brutal war. A masterclass in cinema.

For the second watch: pay attention to the cinematography, it's one of the things which makes this movie stand out

My grandfather was at Dunkirk. Two of the ships that he was on were sunk and he was shot through the shoulder. It didn’t stop him returning to France a few years later, as part of the D-Day landings. He was career military and the most stoic person that I have ever known.

The Miracle of Dunkirk is pretty well known here in the UK. Especially amongst Boomers and Gen X, who had parents or grandparents who served in WWII.

There is a reason it was called the miracle of Dunkirk. You need to watch Darkest Hour with Gary Oldman as a companion to this movie. The evacuation of Dunkirk and the Battle of Britain that followed didn’t win us the war, but just as importantly it meant we didn’t lose the war, and gave us the chance to continue the fight.

The blind man is unmistakably a WW1 veteran blinded by gas while Harry Styles thinks he just won’t look at him he’s so ashamed of the mass evac being driven out of Europe but the elderly man feels Tommy’s face being blind just to get a sense of that youth at war he once knew, nostalgic really because he knows it was upon his own face once

Thank you Ms. Addie for the reaction . .. ... This would be one of the great WW2 movies if Nolan didn't insist on his non-linear time narrative .. .. You'd have to watch at least 2x to put all the pieces together .. ..

The most amazing thing is that Hitler could have EASILY, EASILY, just wiped out everyone @ Dunkirk with very little effort or risk .. .. It's only after the war when the British Army Intelligence found out that Hitler, deep down, was a devotee of history and afraid of England and enraging them .. .. Hitler had told confidants that if he wiped out the British at Dunkirk, England would wipe Germany off the map completely eventually .. ..

Ooh I was looking forward to you seeing this one. Mostly practical effects were used which is really impressive. They put Imax cameras on real Spitfires for the dogfights.
When I first saw it in cinemas the sound of the gunshots made me jump, they sounded so loud it was like the real thing. The event itself is a big turning point for Britain in the war, because without those evacuations they could have lost the bulk of their standing army very early on, and probably wouldn't have held out on their own for as long as they did. The big factors for the evacuations succeeding were the little boats bravely providing ferries and crossings; the Germans making an error to not roll in with their tanks; and probably most importantly, the French troops holding the line of the town to buy time.

2 speeches make me weep - Lincoln's second inaugural and Churchill's address here. Both men were brought forth precisely for the moments they were given. When this American hears Churchill's words here all I can think is God bless, and thank God for, the British people and their soldiers at that time, in that moment. God save the king.

When I was a child I knew a WWII vet who had been at Dunkirk. They were evacuating the beach in anything that would float (some guys tried to row a bathtub across) and dropping any gear that wasn't essential. He was back at his home base shortly after having breakfast, when on the radio Lord Haw Haw read off his name as one of the British soldiers supposedly captured in the evacuation and now a POW. Apparently they got his name from some equipment he discarded. He asked his CO if he could have the rest of the war off since he was reported as a POW, but his CO said to get back to work. lol.

'Dunkirk' is a good film, though I think 'Atonement' (2007; James McAvoy, Keira Knightley) gives a better representation of the scale of the evacuation and what it was like to be on the beach, even though the film only spends a short amount of time there.

Dunkirk is arguably the single most prideful moment of British history. What should have been a utter disaster that could very well have meant losing the war turned into a unbelievable success of a retreat, almost purely down to common people being brave enough to risk there lives and the lives of their loved ones to sail the most basic boats into enemy fire. Possibly the only time in history where a complete retreat was something to be proud of.

Spitfires carried ammunition drums of 300 or 350 rounds for each machine gun, which meant that a pilot could only fire these for a total of 14 to 15 seconds before running empty. So you had to really conserve your ammunition and only shoot when you were almost assured of hitting your target.

Addie, you crack me up. You're all stressed and can't hold still. Your mouth is moving a mile a sec. Sorry, but it's funny. None would have escaped if Hitler had not halted his armies heading towards Dunkirk. Hitler wanted his men fresh and his equipment maintained or repaired for the remainder of the conquest of France. His Generals were surprised and everyone wanted to continue on because they had the British and French on the ropes. But, they had to halt. By the time the Germans restarted their push, the British were gone. The Germans did capture a whole lot of French though. GREAT REACTION - THANK YOU

Christopher Nolan majority of the time uses 70mm and IMAX 70mm Large Format Film, and his preference to Practical Effects, a nod to Traditional Filmmaking, makes most of his movies look so Gritty and Raw.

For "Oppenheimer", he even commissioned Kodak to make the First Ever 70mm IMAX Black and White Large Format Film and filmed ALL in 70mm Large Format Film. VERY EXPENSIVE to shoot in film.

Though I do find Christopher Nolan a bit Overrated as a Director, you gotta respect his decision to Use Older Techniques to Modern Cinematography.

I saw this in IMAX in theaters and it was so stunning. Especially the dogfights in the air storyline. That final reading of Churchill’s speech at the end, with the burning plane…. ‘Until the New World, with all its power and might, shall step forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old.’ Just…. Haunting.

"I guess you just fire a lot of shots and hope one hits"

A Spitfire had around 14 seconds worth of ammunition (300-350 rounds) and many inexperienced pilots ran out very quickly via an over-zealous trigger finger.

At Dunkirk, the English coast is just a fraction under 20 miles away. That was one of the main reasons for choosing it as a landing spot for the British Expeditionary Force, and later the invasion of France to take the war to Germany. A fit man could walk that distance (if it were land) in 5 hours, but without boats it might as well be Mars.

Without wanting to get political it's so disrespectful to other countries when the POTUS diminishes others sacrifices in WW2, which was why there was such outrage at Trumps comments about VE day. Dunkirk is important for the UK because it symbolises our national character (stoicism in the face of adversity , the small boats coming to the rescue of the troops-salvation from the sea, we are an island nation after all etc) and how hope was snatched from the Jaws of a crushing defeat - and I think this film is a great tribute to that.

Big war movie buff here, and Dunkirk is one of my favorites. I love it because everything is shown as hard to do, against a faceless enemy (the Germans at the time were mostly shooting from a distance with artillery and aircraft). Pilots don't act like douchebags. I'm glad they used almost exclusively real effects for the movie, but this leads to its downside, a lack of historical accuracy. The beaches should be full of people and vehicles, there should be many more boats, and the city should be in ruins. But otherwise a great tense movie.
