Highways are and were built for the military we can only use them in peace time

Wow, a 3-year-old episode! Well done.
I think there are just a few factors that make our roads super inefficient.
* Inattentive drivers. They take too long when a light goes green. HUGE gaps between cars, especially those turning left. We can stop a lot of red-light running by making sure that ALL cars stopped at a red will make it through THIS light as well as the next, assuming they drive at the posted speed limit, or within a small variance of same.
* Badly timed or untimed traffic lights. This is ESPECIALLY true on roads with a series of multiple intersections all within close proximity of each other...for example, at roads with ramps; roads at under or overpasses for a freeway.
* Intersections (number and type of lanes, lights, speed limits, and "other") not designed for maximum THROUGHPUT of traffic.

It is my feeling that most governments just want to get us out of our cars and into buses or onto bicycles anyway, so they are not motivated to change or improve anything.

Why are the roads lines so faded that it's a wash out during heavy rain event and why are the curb not painted? It's f#@$&ing frustrating and it's a safety hazard 😡😡

Our "highways" are designed (?) by third grade drop-outs who presume to think that our pathetic roadways can support the monumental excessive tonnage of modern behemoth roadway destroyers which Dominate every square inch of pavement designed for vehicles manufactured over 100 years ago, which themselves were too heavy for roadways even back then!

Two different roads in rural northeast Oklahoma; a country road driving between the hills at 35 mph, and I came upon a right sweeping curve that was totally wrong. The whole thing sloped down and out towards the outer guardrails. Scared the hell out of me and based on the skid marks and damaged rail. A lot of others. The second was another country road through flat farmland at 55 mph. Without a warning sign anywhere I found myself bombing down into a hallow, bottoming out and climbing again. More skid marks everywhere. On the back side of the hollow in the field on right was a round bale of hay, kinda angled by the fence. As I approached I seen more skid marks and slowed, as I passed the bail, out of the corner of my eye I seen something and looked again at the bail. The farmer had a pair of boots and pants sticking out of the center of the bail. This all happened on one vacation in 1991. They have since fixed the roads but the farmer and his bail is there every year.

The question I want answered is: Why do designers of surface streets place manhole covers directly in the path of every vehicle’s right wheels, instead of in the middle of the lane?

I’m a commercial electrician who builds data centers, I enjoy running all sorts of raceways and conduits. Stacked EMT racks are good fun. I’ve always liked thinking the installs were like highways for pulling conductors. Many of these principals are the same!

As an audio engineer, we also make sure that our job is for the audience not to notice our job. If someone singing with too much reverb or the drums are too loud, and people dont enjoy the performance, we did a bad job.
Likewise, if i drive and i talk about potholes or tight curve, i dont enjoy my ride

Can’t remember who it was but they designed the highway around Los Angeles to make it have more traffic so they would spend more money on gas

I think, there is a very different approach to speed limits in the USA and Germany. Maybe because of some kind of liability issue in the USA... In Germany, you as the driver have to decide, which speed you can go safely. Therefore you need to consider not only the road condition and corners, but also the weather, how far you can see ahead, your type of vehicle etc. YOU are responsible for that as a driver. The only reason that there are speed limits is for environmental reasons, noise protection, pedestrians safety, and if there were many accidents on a specific spot. You learn in driving school, that it is not always possible to go the speed limit. For instance there are serpentines, where I live, but the speed limit is just the regular 100 kph. You just cannot go that fast. You can go like maybe 50..60 kph there. Everything else is physically impossible in a normal car without getting off the road.

At least in my country, speed limits are set for ticket revenue. Usually 20-50% lower than the design speed in order to encourage speeding. With abrupt arbitrary speed limit changes. For example, speed limit of 100km/h around a corner with a drop to 60km/h on the straight road following it with no extra risk factors and a speed camera shortly after the limit change.

Why do snow plows move snow to the middle of the highway next to K rail? It takes a long time to melt and it results in water and salt to flow across the highway for days or week. Move the snow off the road to the right. Am I missing something?

Along the straight portion of southbound I55 in Chicago between California/Kedzie and Pulaski there is a "hill" as the highway temporarily goes from below grade to above grade and back.

The approach to the above grade peak always seems to me to be a cause of chain reaction brake lights that causes slow downs.

As a "Planning" graduate student, I will always remember my graduate school traffic engineering professor. I've never met an angrier man. At the beginning of the course he stated "Planners" shouldn't be allowed to take his course. Any question I had was was a waste of his time. I was refered to the engineering college dean for asking why "pedestrians selling goods factor at intersections" wasn't included in the cost assessment. He thought I wasn't a serious student and deserved a dean's reprimand. To this day, I remember this every time I make a discretionary judgement involving traffic engineering.
