Which is Better to Pick in League of Legends?

Is it better to try and pick the most meta champions, or is it better to just pick the champion your most familiar with?

There is a lot of Videos out there with Challenger, Grandmaster, Master, and even diamond players who play League of Legends, but not a ton with the average league player. I want to help show you that even in low elo you can do some amazing thing.
