Paul Sacher was a Swiss conductor, patron, and impresario of modern classical music. He was an influential figure in the development of 20th-century music, commissioning and conducting many works by major composers such as Igor Stravinsky, Béla Bartók, and Pierre Boulez, among others. Sacher also founded the Collegium Musicum Zürich and the chamber orchestra known as the Basler Kammerorchester.

Paul Sacher's wealth came from his family's industrial holdings in Switzerland, specifically their involvement in the pharmaceutical company Hoffmann-La Roche. Sacher inherited a significant portion of the company's shares when his father died in 1934, which made him one of the richest men in Switzerland at the time. He later used his wealth to support the arts and music, becoming a patron of many leading composers and performers of the 20th century.
