That type of plastic barrel will break down structurally inside a year.

Why not focus on alkali lead batteries that won't die from sulfur scale

Fun experiment but you would need 100 barrels on your roof to match the storage power of a few Li-ion batteries.

a fun build! For version 2, i suggest a simple way to increase the energy density, just pressurise the water above atmosphere with excess solar energy.

Solar, wind and battery are the worst investments you could ever make. Is that why they are going hydro?

You bought the wrong one, silly!

Just a thought and not sure if it would help but figured id spitball it here:

If you had a clearer barrel for the water, and placed steel wool in it (or you could use black marbles), youd increase the amount of absorbed light energy inside. This should heat the water, and if it were sealed on top, it should increase the downward pressure of the water, above what gravity alone would give. This would increase your downward flow rate, and in turn increase the amount of juice you get at the end.

The tricky part is making it a closed system. Dunno if someone could engineer the increased pressure to only push downward to the ground instead of also pushing backwards against the pumped water coming upward to the tank.

Dont roast me!

I bought one of those pumps for my guitar humidity control system. Weird design, very inefficient, ran about 6 months. Almost any other pump would be better. Similar system ran rocks up the hill on tracks to store energy.

It happens that the highest reservoir in oregon broke only because no one could stop the pump from filling it…. The choice of a full automatized system without even a video monitor of the water level was a terrible mistake ! Hope things got fixed with a mix of technology and common sense.

Great demonstration of the process to assist in learning concepts of mechanical and electrical engineering.

Maybe you could work additional concepts in, such as the stored water volume required to accomplish some practical task, or how inefficiency in devices like the motor in your example robs the system of energy.

Or how a similar system could be used in other ways and the energy stored could be more efficiently used in another form (I'm thinking captured rainwater pumped to the roof by a solar-charged battery operated motor, to provide evaporative cooling and reduce the electrical energy required for the HVAC system to remove heat from the home).

It's quite good but there are a lot of losses converting mechanical to electricity which is why batteries are preferred

Every energy conversion loses a %. Solar water heating and insulate the container saves energy.

Did you ever consider adding wind turbines . As you said show me a small amount of time the solar is available, however wind turbines will work even if there's a slight breeze.. anybody not provide you with all the power you need but it is a good one to help make up power

@cagatayto
@cagatayto - 05.11.2024 08:51

14k joule, makes only 3.89Wh of energy.
As you mentioned in video, you need to scale up to power a house.
If you scale it up for 1000 times, then you will have only 3.89kWh of energy.

It means a reservoir, instead of barrels.
Then there will be other problems to start. Maintaining, cleaning and water loss to sun.

Btw, if you connect the flow valve to a governor, maybe there will be an autocontrol of power.

Still a good explanation. Thanks.

This video made me extremely angry because he could have just bought a $6 solar powered light thats solar panel foot print is a few inches,charging an 18650 in a package weighing a few ounces if he wanted a light. But hes just standing there smiling like hes some kind of genius. His mom gave him a solar panel because she knows...and feels sorry for him.

In India we all hv rooftop water storage. Either pumped up with electricity or government water supply (which can go up to 2rd floor, for free)
