"Mr. Cohen tried to contact you this morning, young miss. But it seems some of the relay satellites have been destroyed by the UN forces and a connection couldn't be established," said Kvasir.

"Welp. That saves me from coming up with an excuse for not wanting to talk to him," said Camilla savagely. "I mean, what was that last sortie? Mobius One, Golden King and I were all deployed to the same area. And yet they wouldn't let us approach the base even when the black Falken , that yellow-wing tipped Su-37, and even a Wyvern with blue highlights on its wings appeared and flattened that base!"

"Indeed I could not comprehend the strategy employed. Purely anti-ground defensive weaponry, no fighter cover besides the Papillon candidates. Engagements above the base was forbidden for us. These conditions were certainly not conducive for a defense, let alone a ballistic missile launch from the base or the hidden launchers in the adjacent dam," commented Kvasir.

The Sons of Troia in their desperation had attempted to launch several nuclear warheads from a secret base that was located in a patch of isolated land right between the borders of eastern Europe, the Russian Federation and Asia. When it's location was revealed, there was initially a massive scrimmage between European countries, Russia and the few Asian countries that had not sworn fealty to the USEA Federation . Every side claimed jurisdiction on that small piece of land and wanted to send in only their forces to destroy the base and seize any usable assets.

Eventually, a compromise was reached with an operation led by only mercenaries. It would be a competition of sorts with one mercenary pilot being hired by each side. The mercenaries themselves had no connection with any of these territories. To them it was all about the money, and reputation. So the black Falken pilot who was simply known as "Blaze" took the European contract, the Su-37 pilot who simply called themselves "Yellow" took the Russian contract and the last pilot who was stupid enough to name himself in public, Jean-Louis Flaubert and his X-02A Wyvern took the Asian commission. Rumour has it that Jean-Louis tried to make a backroom deal to get a contract from all sides, but was caught almost immediately and thus he was forced to take considerably less pay than the other mercenaries. The Asian representatives couldn't be happier, and the other mercenaries couldn't stop laughing.

The operation went well. Perhaps too well for the countries squabbling over the land...or rather the base. Blaze, Yellow and Jean-Louis were very thorough in the destruction of the base leaving absolutely nothing salvage worthy. Even the underground launch bay were little more than melted scrap. Blaze and Yellow joked that perhaps Jean-Louis performs better after a bit of humiliation. And indeed, going by the dollar value of all the targets he destroyed, he was certainly the MVP of that operation. The Wyvern had streaked like a bolt of lightning over the base, surprising everyone when it outperformed even the Falken which was supposed to be a sixth generation fighter. None of the nuclear missiles were even close to being launched when they were destroyed by the mercenaries. In the end, the whole place was turned into worthless non-arable land. Whoever got to claim that patch of land would end up spending more money maintaining it with little to no benefit. Needless to say, that caused another round of political squabbling. But the mercenaries got paid and they were all happy....well not quite all of them.

The Papillon pilots had a good view of it but they were unable to intervene in the fight, and the mercenaries did not pursue them while they were out of range. Camilla and Mobius One had never been more miserable. "Peanut gallery", Golden King had muttered, also flying a QFA-44 Carmilla. As Camilla mused over all the battle reports and intelligence leaks from the UN forces, Kvasir informed her that the simulator was ready.

"The next mission in Ace Combat 7 is a similar scenario," said Kvasir, "but with different terrain and considerably better defense than your previous assignment. As you did not have the opportunity to fight in the last battle, I'm sure this will lift your spirits a bit. The enemy in the game is already in the final stages of launch so the time pressure should be an entertaining challenge."

"I certainly get more action in games then I do with this job," muttered Camilla.
