Nice retrospective. It would have been nice if you found a relevant effect/visual/sound from The War of the Worlds, my fav of all-time. It just had that dark, naive, nostalgic and frightening quality that is so essential to the formative years of SF movies.

You left out my number one effect from the 1950s. The iconic Godzilla Roar was made by rubbing a rosin bag on cello strings. Simple but chilling.

"Eath vs. the Flying Saucers" (1956) Paul Frees' voice recordings got the FUBAR treatment.
"The Day the Earth Stood Still" (1951) Lock Martin's deliberate "March of the Robot"

According to Ray Harryhausen, one of the sound effects in EARTH VS. THE FLYING SAUCERS was taken from a sewage treatment plant that looked like a missile base. That was the location where he shot the scenes where the aliens first landed. It was the hum of the sewage moving through the pipes. He always chuckled when he related that story in the interviews I've seen.

I think we all took sound affects for granted back then, I remember when Star Wars came to DVD and it included “the making of” it was fascinating to watch how they made all the sound affects, worth watching if you have not.

I watched Ray Harryhuasen interview the saucers noises were from Hermosa sewage plant

I had no idea the "electronic tonalities" were hated by the musician's union! That's crazy! I suppose it's not too different from the VFX artists hating AI today, although Louis and Bebe Barron didn't steal anything.
