Gradualism vs Punctuated Equilibrium | Biology |

Which one is correct ? Or how do we incorporate the punctuated equillibrium in modern evolutionary theory ? I have a hard time mixing these two. I have always thought evolution was gradual. (I am an engineer so I don’t really know much of it )
