At the end of WW1, Ferdinand Porsche was a talented car designer working for Daimler. He designed their highly successful Mercedes-Benz SSK, which dominated motor racing in the 1920s. Talented and ambitious, in the 1930s he quit his good job at Daimler to run a struggling design consultancy in Stuttgart, Germany. To survive, Porsche’s company teamed up with 3 other struggling automotive brands to create Auto Union. This union pitched two design concepts to Adolf Hitler. One went on to become the VW Beetle, the other turned into the German racing car team. Porsche had a hand in both, and there was a reason for that. This episode tells the story of how Ferdinand Porsche became one of the most influential engineers in all Nazi Germany, and by inventing the slowest war machines in the world, created the blueprint for the muscle cars that would make his name.
