The neck tattoo is fake. He said that in an interview. And I love the singer Fuki of this band and don't really like the singer Asami of lovebites. But because Miyako is a Goddess so I still think lovebites is good overall. And Unlucky Morpheus is formed way before lovebites.

The guitarist in the white jacket is the main composer (Shiren). If you didn't notice, his guitar is on a stand as he has a condition in his right arm that prevents him from holding it for a whole concert. Shiren also likes to write Neo-classic metal.

Bass playing is terrible? I think Misa from Band-Maid and Fami from Lovebites would respectfully disagree. 🤣

Speaking of Dream Theater, "The Dance of Eternity" by QUADRATUM, an instrumental metal project associated with UM, is amazing; QUADRATUM gets special praise for the violin, but you can really appreciate the drums and bass, too. The instrumental music makes it easy to hear the rhythm section. When you look at related bands and old works, you can see that there are many aspects of UM.

There are many things that make UM different from lovebites, but one of them is the strong Japanese element. lovebites also has some parts that consciously incorporate Japanese elements, such as yona-nuki scale(*1), but it is nothing compared to UM. Therefore, it is unlikely that Japanese metalheads would consider lovebites and UM to be close bands. For example, most of the members of UM are X JAPAN lovers, and bassist Hiroyuki Ogawa was also greatly influenced by LUNA SEA, which is related to X JAPAN.

*1 Some people have translated the yona-nuki scale as the pentatonic scale, but they are wrong; the scale itself is the same, but the impression is completely different because the scale is used in a different way.

Unluck Morpheus are a Brilliant Japanese band and I'm travelling all the way from London to Japan to see them play live in late June and I'm really looking forward to seeing the band

I know it was meant as a joke, but I want to change the quote about bass playing a bit.
"Most Western bass playing is terrible". I have always loved the sound of a bass guitar and was actually amazed once I got into Japanese music how much more they utilize that instrument. And not only in metal, but Japanese rock bands and even pop groups use bass guitar extensively with bass solos not being outliers in multiple bands.

I am not really sure why that is, there might be more skilled bassplayers in Japan and jazz is still pretty big over there, so that might have something to do with it as well. But I have noticed over time that almost all bands I have heard out of Japan have at least a decent bass player but most of them are good to absolutely amazing.

Edit:
My favourite bass player at the moment is from the Japanese (mainly) instrumental 3-piece band Asterism. I highly recommend checking them out, they play proggy metal to hard rock but all of it is technical. A couple recommendations:
- ASTERISM 『DAWN』2019/04/20 (fancam, so not the best quality, but a fan favourite because it shows how insanely talented they are)
- ASTERISM - Light In The Darkness (LIVE) [from Welcome to INFERNO vol.MAX] (also live, but from their official channel)
- ASTERISM - Church (Live in Studio) (one of their slower tracks and an other fan favourite, but I think you will still enjoy the technical chops)

But all of their (Live In Studio) tracks are really good from that album. Some of their newer stuff has some vocals and they have also done a cover album with anime intro covers and while still very good and it shows how skilled they are, it's imo not as good as their own material.
