I believe there are actually two types of Graboids. The American Graboids, and the African Graboids.

I remember watching a video a long time ago that was kinda like this explaining graboids. But it was framed as like a REALLY old vhs like documentary.

Also what's the problem with the blaster's full name? Gotta problem with it?

I believe these creatures are designed as primordial evolutionary offshoot of enormous prehistoric insects (replacing chitin and exoskeletal features for musculature) with seperate steps of metamorphosis, allowed to specialize after eons or lacking predators and withstanding natural disasters.

So the 'traditional' graboids are hatched from eggs dug out of deep underground mining/oil drilling from Cambrian layers, so earth was mostly a single continent. The African version appears often enough that they are embedded in local mythology as a reoccurring threat, so likely the African ones started out the same but unlike the ones dug up have had time to evolve. With their relatively short life cycle they could evolve relatively quickly. The food explanation makes a lot of sense of the first attack timeline. The hyper-aggressive assaults on the human population didn't start until almost a day after the sheep farm was emptied. This is also partially that the first several recorded graboid events occurred in a valley that had no exit for the Graboids, they were trapped there. Normally I imagine part of the Blaster evolution was to spread the eggs to new territory so the graboids wouldn't over hunt an area. The graboid mutants are also explained by its lifecycle. The shriekers are very stupid and will attempt to eat anything mildly warm. In the past that wasn't a problem but in modern day they ingest a lot of carcinogens, so the shrieker embryos come out with mutations, often cancer but there are so many of them a survivable idea makes it through now and then. Then there is EL Blanco, while not technically canon anymore, this albino Graboid, is effectively immortal, he isn't developing shriekers internally. And his genome was analyzed, he doesn't have tellomeres, so he doesn't really get old. He doesn't get any bigger (though he's already the largest graboid) and has a very set patrol pattern. He isn't as relentlessly aggressive as his metabolism is in a dormant phase most of the time. Without the developing shriekers inside his feeding habits are on par with a pride of lions, they put a sheep or cow out for him every couple of weeks, he eats the occasional stupid tourist, and sometimes they feed him the problem of the week.

I love graboids so the theory that they're going extinct due to their excessive metabolism kinda makes me sad. Even though they are dangerous fictional creatures

I would like to suggest that the transition between the Shrieker and Blaster stages is triggered via a form of quorum sensing. When the population of Shriekers in an area grows too large to be sustainable, say when they can no longer find enough food to reproduce within a given time period, triggering the change.

Hi SciFi Safari!
Great to meet you here, too. Would you consider a proposition for a further destination? Due to the greater mobility provided by your scientific spaceship, would travel to the sands of Arrakis to meet a similar complex life-form? Of course, I'm talking about the Sandworms, which are the most known stage of a lifecycle that allows the planet Dune to sustain allochthonous life. With all of its features and various stages, it could take more than one time to explore it in depth, but I'd be really interested to hear you talk about it. As well as its property to cohabit symbiotically with a well-prepared human-host.
My best regards to You!

I want to offer a correction: one of the movies (or the show, I can’t remember off the top of my head) refers to graboids as “Large Scale Desert Reptilians”. I think they DO have skeletons. (I’m a major Tremors fans so I’ve thought about all this stuff a LOT)

Tremors what a great not so old film, it still holds up as a must watch today.
Part 2 was a big cluster F@ck in my opinion the stupid introduction of its evolution into those A$$blasters almost ruined everything.

What if they're cephalopods? The head is an enlarged modified beak, the graspers are modified tentacles, and the semirigid cuttlebone being what it is.
