How Hannibal tricks them in season one is not bad!

What a thorough deep dive into hannibal as a franchise and the adaptations and how they deviate from each other and the original source material. As someone who adores the nbc show and really liked silence of the lambs but never saw any other installments, this was such a good video to get into and I watched it all in one sitting

As someone who fell utterly in love with the Lecter books (Red Dragon in particular), I was in nerd heaven watching the show. Especially when hearing lines that featured in the books. I was almost as bad as a Tolkien fan watching the Jackson films, my wife can confirm.

The changes that the show made did take me by surprise (Alan Bloom becoming Allana, Jack Crawford being Cowboy Curtis, Freddie Lounds’ gender bend), as I am one who tends to prefer casting close to the source material, but I was very happy with the portrayals in the show! It certainly turned up the drama compared to the books, but that’s expected for a TV crime thriller. And I loved it! Fishburne’s Jack Crawford felt tragic yet warm. Dancy’s Will Graham felt tormented and alone. And my wife and I loved to hate Lounds.

I also have to say, the show was the only piece of Lecter adaptation to include my favorite line from Red Dragon: “He put his hand on me, just like a pet.” I don’t know why but I love that line so much. So that definitely gets a thumbs up in my book lol

Brothers and sisters, happy to see so many Hannibal tv-show fans.
Anyone else think the teams handling
"fashion"
"enviroments"
"light/filters"
"Filming/directing"
AND
"Music"

Are All at master level.

This show made me feel everything, some scenes even evoced taste....because they gave it all to this show.

Hate they stopped after last season, gave little room for Hannibals 5d chess games.

But at least we got closure, and what weird closure we got.

Take care all <3

I always thought that Hannibal wanted to see his humanity vindicated and accepted by someone. He chose Will because he sensed a bond with him and driving him to explore his sociopathy was a way to bridge between his alien but yet still human psyche and someone who exhibited such hypersensitivity.

I always likened Hannibal to a sort of animal. His actions are inhuman because he’s more akin to a force of nature. I got that from the antler monster that constantly appears.

Jonathan Demme is pronounced Demm-ee, like Dummy with an 'e'. Orion is pronounced oh-RYE-on. Can't believe you have to be told you this stuff. Also: can't believe you haven't mentioned the art direction of the programme, which is by far its greatest achievement. See also: American Gods season one (before they fired Fuller).

I feel so seen when you talk about Bedelia’s flaws as a character. She always came off as bland because she never really establishes her own personality other than being Hannibal’s willing/unwilling partner or hostage, and never says her reasons for being such. The writers didn’t know what to do with her and it seems she never knew what to do with herself. Gillian Anderson herself found her own dialogue “ludicrous,” joking that she didn’t understand what her own character was saying half the time.

While I love Red Dragon, both the film and book, I sympathize with the point about Will Graham's portrayal.

The writing for the character makes me think they tried to emulate that 'babyfaced, young aspiring rookie cop vs big baddie" that was present for a large portion of Silence of the Lambs (it only avoided feeling cliche because Clarice actually develops as a character that has more depth). Will Graham, on the other hand, feels like he came from a completely different movie, like as if the director watched Se7en or Zodiac the night prior to shooting.

I had a hard time getting into Hannibal at first, mostly because I associate AXN shows with cheapo, soap opera detective dramas, which this series felt like it would be, but thankfully developed into an actually competent series (just wish it was more subtle in some aspects, that it had that Lynchian touch of suspense). Also the bromance that the fandom seemed obsessed over made me think the two of them would just straight up fuck at some point (this fear is the reason I refuse to watch Supernatural)

I've read and seen Red Dragon, Silence of the Lambs, and Hannibal. I read them in that order. I watched them in the order of SoTL, Hannibal, and Red Dragon due to when they came out. As you said, SoTL is one of the best films ever made if not the best for the reasons you mentioned. But I think there are a few other things going on. First, if like me, you happened to see the movies in the order they were released, our first introduction to this world and these films is Hannibal as the anti-hero. Hannibal punishes Miggs for being disgusting. Hannibal punishes Dr. Chillton for being a crass medical buffoon. But there was something safe about it- like... sure, he's a psychopath that defies further description, but he's locked up so it's not a problem. Jack Crawford's assessment of him may have been right- "He did it to amuse himself"- but that's not nearly as dramatic as how Hannibal interacts with people so Hannibal had flare while Crawford had logic. Not to mention, Red Dragon and SoTL are clearly the better books, but there's more of a flow to SoTL and the flow between book and movie was the best. As far as Hannibal, it's much different to see him free. But more than that, the book was not great. Plus, as much as they tried to make the movie... I don't know... flow and stay consistent with the source... there's just no denying that Hannibal is a monster and he makes you feel uncomfortable. You can't hide that while having a plot and action. Anyways, I love watching media critiques and the more source material and types of source material the more interesting the critiques.

This is the first video of yours I've seen and I really enjoyed it! Your narration is a great blend of humor, analysis, and plot. I'll definitely be checking out your other vids after this.

Outing myself as a Hannigram fan right now, I just wanted to say I appreciated the way you mentioned how insanely layered and nuanced Hannibal and Will's relationship is. I've never really understood how people choose to completely ignore the tension between them and claim it's purely platonic. Conversely, I also don't get it when fans disregard their clinical, mad scientist, poking-a-caged-animal-with-a-stick obsession with each other to focus only on a romance between them. I think it's much more interesting (and true to the show) to recognize that it's probably a weird, fascinating, highly unhealthy mix of all of the above.

Also, I personally loved the way Molly and her son were incorporated into the story, since it's either implied or outright stated that Molly's ex-husband died, and that still she loves him and grieves him, mirroring the way Will is grieving his loss of Hannibal and their kinship during Hannibal's incarceration.

And I think it's so funny that Hugh Dancy auditioned to play young Hannibal in Hannibal Rising. Man was dodging bullets 🙏

Dem-me Dem-me , Jonathan Demme . You show a clip of him getting an award where they announce his name! And The Novel Hannibal is a good book, just not what SOTL movie fans wanted. Did you read it? The Book is called Hannibal, not Silence of The Lambs 2, and it's the 1st time we spend time with Lecter outside his cell. We wanted to see him navigating the world, delving into his mind palace, and riffing a master level lecture on the aesthetics of Dante’s poetry in perfect Italian. The parts in Italy are half the story, not expendable filler. Big chunks left out of the Hannibal film are weaved into the series to great effect. But how if the book was so bad? Maybe the longer medium allowed the producers to better mine the novels? Maybe the book has something to offer. I do like the sheer perversity of your "Harris sabotaged his own book" theory though. Of course you have to set aside that Clarice Starling's arc fits hand in glove with what she dealt with in SOTL, institutionalized misogyny & male violence , both book and film drip with it. Her story in Hannibal continues that same vein, with the the FBI she's devoted everything to demands she figuratively offer herself up as sacrifice to feed a boorish alpha-male's ambitions. Lecter showed Clarice an option she never would have imagined on her own, he had to break things down for her. She did not have to always be the victim of men's devilry.
