Why is perception a problem? Imagine a world without perception, now that's a problem

You want to use words in phrases that are undefinable. You blame interpretation because you feel highly educated and a lessor individual cannot possibly know what you have seen in working in cutting edge science. the only purpose we use spoken language for is to communicate. if anyone has a word to invent, the word must couple with a definition. If the definition is able to change depending on who interprets the word, NO word has been invented. Banana in English is very clear to all and known to be a yellow skinned, 4-10 in curved fruit, 1-2 inches in girth, edible..... banana is a usable word. if language is misused it can be determined to be a misuse when interpretation enters the conversation. successful communication cannot rely on interpretation if it does the validity is nonexistent making the purpose we use language unable to represent a form of communication. Duality cannot live nor function on any level. A simple mathematic function can be used to show the reality of this. If a positive integer meets a negative integer their very existence is canceled. No value, no content, no potential is left. I am by all means saying day and night n is a range of comparison. Opposites do not have the ability to exist. Jordan, you where mentioning Photoshop manipulation of the image. Every stage of visual manipulation must have a refference in the original source "image" all the time, only if you change the new temporarry state of the image and make it a new source by saving it, you will have another version, technically free of the source information of the previous image, as an iterration.. So, you will have the copy ( just like an iterration of the human being, shared, copied DNA from the Father to the Son) of the choosen state as "new" original and now, be able to proceede from there. So, its not that complicated, just like the world isnt if you understand the principle, since you have a refference points for every stage from which you can recreate the proces of every change by changing variables (and variables are definite). The only possible problem with this otherwise magnificent sermon - which is what this is, in the best Emersonian sense of that word - is that it happens in Cambridge! of all places! Peterson’s readiness to submit to strong emotion over the course of his talk will not, as it might in North America, play as a display of deep integrity. An audience of English academics will simply regard it as bad manners.

Going deep into the structure of perception misses so much about the mechanics of perception. No-one is explicitly taught that all 5 senses are variations.of touch, it's self-evident in a detailed analysis of perception.

gained many revelations from this but am still stumped as to what his answer is to the problem of perception? I think he alludes to it in “meaning infers objects”, ie that meaning is inherently placed all throughout reality and that there are infinite potential and subjective levels rather than just one rigid and solitary objective form or “object inferring meaning”. and so given that our perceptions are of infinite levels, that the next natural rationale is to create a hierarchy of perceptual levels so as to aim for the highest good amongst these perceptions because… why the hell (or heaven, for that matter) not. why not see if we can perceive the highest out of all. the phrase “I see God in you” comes to mind. to see God in people, or things, or environments, is to recognize and act upon such hierarchical superordination and to rely on coalition and love rather than disparity and disharmony. quite the beautiful and ethereal tie in to art, music, nature, and God there at the end IMO, alluding to the fact that this tendency of ours to revere and create imitations of the natural world in and around us is evidence of higher perceptual levels and serves as a reminder that we are united by, if not by a man in the sky, then at the very least; the sky itself.

This is why I do not believe in AI hype, particularly in the context of robots. It's not as simple as scanning an environment and the machine knowing what the object represent; self-driving cars aren't anything close to AGI because they have a very narrow field of definitions in their perception, basically they only view objects as something to avoid and have no sense of what they ARE. We're decades if not centuries away from true AGI.

Wow. I work with freelance web design clients and let me tell you, this talk is so damn applicable to web design work. Clients come with business models which have to be ordered in a perception structure that is easily navigable, understandable, and even enticing to the client.

In Wordpress, which I use, everything is either a Post Type (which is a type or set of data), a Taxonomy (which is used to categorise sets of data), or a Custom Field (which is used to populate the former with information inside of the database). Perhaps one of the most satisfying initial challenges of a web design project is taking a more or less clear business structure, and translating it into a web structure.

It's amazing how many of the questions in this talk come up in talks with clients, when trying to negotiate a proper structure for their website.
