I guess I'm the only one (yes, I have severe clinical depression) that isn't blown away by this film. I understand and can identify with this film portrayal, but I guess I simply wasn't in the "mood." 🤷🏼‍♀️

I watched this movie once, a looooong time ago. Over the years, it has quietly lived on a top shelf that I’ve always pushed aside.
Never has a movie affected me so much. I just can’t explain it.
I will never watch it again. That doesn’t mean the movie wasn’t any good. In fact, It’s quite the opposite. It made me feel and understand things that I didn’t want to face- nor do I still want too.
I guess you can say, when the ending happened, I felt like I was swallowed into the black hole too.
I know this doesn’t make sense. But if you haven’t seen the movie and if you suffer from mental illness, maybe then you’ll get the understanding from it.
I think the director is absolutely amazing. What a brilliant mind he has….

I always felt Von Trier was trying to make people who didn’t understand depression, feel what it feels like. It’s hard to describe to someone who has never experienced periods of depression, let alone a lifetime struggle with it. This film makes you feel it. It’s heavy, it grinds you down. It works so well as a metaphor but also telling the story of how detached and accepting of disaster you can become when suffering deep states of depression.

I don’t enjoy all his films, but I feel like most of the time he doesn’t make things to be ‘enjoyed’ he makes them to make you feel a certain way.

I really don't sympathize or relate to this film's view on depression.
Yes depression can cuase us to act out of character, dissociate, and make us cynical.
But its no excuse to be as cruel as Justine is throughout the film.
From cheating on her husband by pinning a guy down and banging him, beating a horse, and just being a complete bitch to her Sister who is taking care of her. It just doesn't sit right with me as someone with clinical depression.
Justine doesn't come off as a person struggling with depression but an asshole who has depression.

Not sure if the film is glorifying it or trying to be "relatable" but it's just my thoughts on it if it is.

Hello. Wow. Thanks so much you took time to make this! 🎉❤ Love it.
I was fascinated by this movie.
Feeling a bit surprised... In the end you are saying that you generally have "some problems" with the film.
As there was no further explanation to this, I am wondering what exactly you meant. Maybe it's in more detail in some of your other videos. Thanks so much again. I watched this movie back in the days... Amazing. Lately, I had to think about it again... Good luck... Peace

I've seen myself in this Kirsten Dunst character many times. The film really deals with the subject very well from the point of view of a world literally about to end and Justine's already finished world. I've seen it several times and it always serves me to reflect how sad and deep a person with depression is.

Never seen the film. Byung-Chul Han says the depression of the main character is relieved by the coming catastrophic collision of the rogue planet
The radical Other of the planet pulls her from the narcissistic depression. Eros extinguishes depression. It calls you from yourself.
Read the book Agony of Eros
50 pages, and he talks about Melancholia in the first chapter

That scene where she lies naked on the grass by the lake, looking up at Melancholia as it’s spreading its light over her, she looks so calm, content, at peace with her mind and herself. It was so beautiful, beyond words can ever describe.

I discovered this picture while holidaying in Sweden at Tjolöholm mansion (where the film was shot), often referred to as a castle though it's more of a Gilded Age mansion like the Vanderbilt Biltmore estate. The film strongly resonated with me, especially as someone who has battled depression and anxiety throughout life. It offered valuable introspection, leading me to consider a therapeutic approach, now convinced of my melancholic nature.

From 8 to 14 years old, i suffered a terribile form of depression. I was completely alienated from the world around me. I harbored a deep hatred towards me, humanity and life itself. Every single day looked exactly like the previous one, to me. I forced myself to smile, even if i didn't wanted to, and because of that i felt so hypocritical and fake. As a result, i tried to kill myself multiple times. I started also self-harming around that time, and even having nightmares. If you ask me, i don't remember almost everything of that time, except the fact that i was mentally exhausted. Now i've found my inner peace, thanks to the psychological healing process that i've started with my counselor. About "Melancholia", i felt Justine's suffering throughout the entire movie and i saw myself in her. The "It tastes likes ashes" scene pretty sums up what i thought of almost every movie i watched during that time.

What a horrible slow as hell movie, boring as anything I've ever seen, with an ending that doesn't make sense at all, though Kristen Dunst acting is great, but the movie is just horrible. Good thing that the director touches depression, but is a depressing slow movie with a horrible idiotic ending

Melencolia I is a large 1514 engraving by the German Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer. It is most scientific painting and Kristen Dunst is most Germanic origin actor and Lars Von Trier have German nobility title. Melancholia intrinsic trait of northern countries where Sun is rare, the only escape from everyday dread is contemplation or beer.

Wonderfully summarized in words. I saw this movie recently, so many years later but it's ok. If I had seen it at the time it was published, I might not fully understand it. What I identify with most is that Justin remains stronger and calmer shortly before the catastrophe than the people who were previously able to draw their strength from all their planning, order and security

You are 100% wrong on why von Trier uses Tristan und Isolde . It is literally about the joys of suicide/death in general and the untenability of life amongst social pressures. It is not a "song" and most certainly not just a pretty bit of music to contrast a sad movie... This prelude uses the most painful theme (the Tristan accord) in all of classical music. It shows the pain of life and a longing for death.

I'd really recommend spending some more time on understanding Wagners dramas, as they have highly philosophical intricate plots worthy of intense study.

I remember forcing smiles at my own wedding and feeling as if this moment in time was somehow duller for me than others. I found this movie to be so remarkably poetic and almost like it was made for just me. I have yet to meet someone who appreciates it as much as I do. When in depression, I became an actress and the quality of my existence became became detached like I was pretending to be someone else. And years after my divorce I understand a part of that was trying to be the person I felt he wanted me to be. He never understood my true self and I blamed myself for that. In depression you try to retain some control and thus become susceptible to all other kinds of illusions.
