What was the War of Currents?

In the late 19th century, a battle of innovation erupted, Thomas Edison, believed that direct current was the key to powering the world. However, his direct current system had limitations. It was expensive and suffered from energy dissipation. Nikola Tesla saw the potential in alternating current, a system that could transmit electricity more efficiently over long distances. The rivalry between the two inventors reached its peak during the infamous "War of the Currents." Edison, determined to prove the dangers of alternating current, even went as far as publicly electrocuting animals. He believed that by showcasing the lethal effects of alternating current, he could instill fear and sway public opinion in favor of his direct current system. These demonstrations included electrocuting animals such as cats, dogs, and even an elephant named Topsy. In the end however, history sided with Tesla.
