I always thought Imu was possessing someone since they always referred to her as he/ him and I don’t think it was a play on words by calling her the king. What if Gunko controls the abyss and it's an awakened power

Imu is the abyss. Abyss is a synonym for void, which is one translation of Imu from Japanese to English. Is it a God fruit? Maybe, idk if that matters.

By casting a victims soul, partially, into the void/abyss Imu is free to use anyone as puppets. They may even keep devil fruit's "souls" in the abyss; which allows them to summon and delegate different powers to different people. The elders didn't eat devil fruits, they simply gained the power of mythical beasts because of their link to Imu's void. God's Knights ate fruits but because they're connected to the void, Imu can borrow the "souls" of their fruits and use their powers at will (The arrows that killed Cobra). Blackbeard's darkness fruit is a cheap imitation of the Void fruit. It can also pull in the "souls" of devil fruits and allow it's user to use multiple powers. But there's likely a limit, while the abyss is eternal. Imu could, hypothetically, take control of whole armies and thus gain use of thousands of fruits at once. His powers are simply broken and only someone a) with immense Haki and b) a diverse power of their own can hope to fight him. Luffy is the perfect counter. (I have a belief that if Luffy imagined his friends having devil fruits,, they'd have the powers, so he could build a small army of Nika's)
